Calling me beautiful is nice, but not when it's used to insult yourself. The last guy I dated kept telling me that I was "too good for him, too beautiful for him." It gets annoying after a while. Just leave it at "Wow. You're hott."
ETA: and to answer James' original question: always tell a beautiful woman she is beautiful. because if she knows it, she's going to flaunt it. and she needs you to validate what she knows. |

She may not NEED validation, but that doesn't mean that she doesn't like hearing it from time to time. |

Kids we are talking about girls that are aesthetically beautiful and have received some form of external validation such as modeling or beauty contests etc . .
Most people think their significant others are dazzling . . even when they aren't. |
I think it's nice, from the right people. Sometimes I have guys tell it to me like it's an insult and they just assume I am a bitch b/c of it? That totally irritates me, I mean I think I am ok looking but I have had a lot of issues my whole life with the way I look, and I hate it when people talk to me as though I don't know what it's like to be insulted or something. Errgh!!
Also, my ex told me all the time that I was beautiful, it was excessive. I didn't mean a thing. The other guy in my life however just recently started saying "you're beautiful" like once in a while, after like 7 months. I thought he was just a total insensitive monster, but he's not, thus making his compliment more meaningful. Whew, ok I'm done. :D |

Furthermore, women who primarily base their self-worth on looks tend to be even more self-conscious than average women because many of them think that their entire worth as a human being depends on their looks. For example, studies show that attractive women are more likely to develop eating disorders than plain women -- in part because the attractive girls grew up hearing "You're so beautiful" whereas the plain girls grew up hearing "You're so smart" or "You're so nice" or "You're such a great athlete/singer/dancer/whatever" -- and so a lot of women whose good looks overshadow their other good qualities worry that if they lose their looks there won't be anything left to love about them. They also tend to be much more fine-tuned when it comes to changes in their appearance, like five extra pounds. So yeah, even women who get external validation from things like modelling and pageants can be very insecure about the way they look. Not to mention that any boyfriend who DOESN'T tell his girlfriend why he's attracted to her is a pretty ishtty boyfriend. |
My girl was in a couple a&f pages...no Tyra banks and she'll make sure she tells you about how pretty she is regardless.
-Rudey --I punch her in the shoulder and she'll know deep down that means i think she's cute. |
I think that you have to mix it up too, though. I was once with a guy who was always telling me how "cute" I was. It made me feel like I was six... and in addition, he never said anything about how I'm funny, or smart, or sweet and caring... it was always just "cute"
I'm sure your fine-ass girlfriend has lots of other good qualities, make sure that she knows you appreciate those too! |
Don't say it every other second, it sounds insincere. But I agree, hearing it every so often from the right person is a wonderful thing. :D Everyone's insecure about their looks at some point, I think.
And I think this point is valid for men too. A story: I have this male friend who is absolutely, absolutely gorgeous. Every female friend I've introduced him to has gotten an instant crush on him once they meet. (Nothing's ever happened between us...he's like an older brother to me.) A few years ago I was visiting him and we went out to this club. There was this girl there who he'd seen several times before but hadn't the guts to go up and talk to. One of his friends sent this girl a drink from him right before we all left...well, he was freaking out about that, saying that he can't go up and talk to her now because his friend did that. That he didn't think she would want him to talk to her...blah blah blah. I swear it sounded like the kind of conversations some of my female friends and I had about guys! (He's married now, by the way.) |
yes yes yes definatley tell a girl when you think she looks hot- it makes me feel fantastic- however i definately have to side with some of the girls- don't go overboard and don't be creepy about it= some english guys are all like your soooo beautifullll i'm like ewww get away- but a guy being like you look hot when you dressed up- or even when she is complaining about how gross she looks- hearing that something like "your beautiful to me no matter what yo uthink" is definately a confidence booster....;)
