Okay, I went onto the Girl Scouts website and using the Council Finder, found this:

Girl Scouts-Bluebonnet Council, Inc
Waco, Texas 76710-5347
(254) 756-4497
(800) 460-4497 - Local Toll Free Phone
Web Site: http://www.bluebonnetgsc.org

Maybe through them, you can find out how to get in touch with "Troop 7527" (that's the one that is left with 2 members)

Good luck and tell me if you find out anything! :D

The Girl Guide (i.e. Canadian) cookies are now made by Dare, but they were formerly made by Nabisco, who, if you trace the "lineage" through, is part of good ole' RJ Reynolds (yes, the tobacco company). So, yes, in theory, the Girl Guides were in bed with the devil, but no one really seemed to care. I have no idea why they switched to Dare but it was NOT because of the RJ Reynolds thing. If someone wants to look around www.girlguides.ca, I am sure you can find out more.

Sigh......

I don't know anyone who's involved in Guiding anymore so I haven't had a chance to taste the new cookies. Do they taste at all similar? I used to be totally addicted to the vanilla ones!

Girl scout ccookies are not cheap anymore either!

Those little mercenaries got me for like 3 boxes and I don't even eat cookies so had to give them away.

Lady Pi Phi 03-03-2004 11:20 PM

If we can't buy the cookies we should donate some money to the troop.

It's a shame really. Do the parents think these girls are going to be living in some pure virgin bubble for the rest of there lives? They're going to get information about sex whether the parents like it or not (and it'll probably be from their friends and it'll the worst possible information/advice ever since these girls are all from the same place).
The girls should be able to go to their parents for information on sex (but apparently these parents conceived their children through immaculate conception), but if the can't go to their parents, Planned Parenthood is the next best thing.

I would like to help the troop out. Scouts (or Girl Guides as it's known here) is a good thing. I was one. It'll be a shame if their troop folds.

Not really related but oh well.

When I was a Girl Scout we'd always set up shop at the shopping center right between the Bank ATM and the entrance of Safeway. We'd see people going to the ATM because they were going into the store, and we'd get them to buy boxes. Most usually did because they felt guilty and we KNEW they had cash on them!

Years later, those Girl Scout brats are still doing the same thing and they got me giving into them. It's okay though. I got boxes of Thin Mints in my freezer so when I get a craving for them in July/August, I'm all good.

Peaches-n-Cream 03-04-2004 01:26 AM

My mother was our troop leader, too. We never sold cookies. I don't know why.

Yes, they taste quite similar. Just the logo/design on them is different.

I will need to look at the website and see what kind of flavors there are! What do you Americans recommend? I've never tried an American Girl Scout cookie!
I was never a Girl Guide, but I was a Girl Guide leader for my niece's Sparks troop. So fun! How much money will you need per box? How much do they cost? Will you get them when you are over at Fred Meyer?

Actually, if you were a leader for your niece's Sparks then you're a Guide yourself (unless you were never formally enrolled). I remember a couple of mothers who were enrolled as adults when I was enrolled as a Brownie. It's kind of like being an AI! :)

NOTE: "Enrollement" in Canadian Guiding is when one receives her pin.

Jill1228 03-04-2004 04:57 AM

Sigrid,
Those rugrats are outside of every grocery store during cookie time!

They have these:

* Thin Mints

*Peanut Butter Patties

*Peanut Butter Sandwich

Piņatas

Reduced Fat Lemon Pastry Cremes

Classic Shortbread

*Caramel deLites

Animal Treasures

I have tried the asterik ones and I love these. If you like shortbread, you will love those.

Pinatas and Animal Treasures are new

While I agree with your suggestion to buy the cookies, I don't really think the problem is with the Bible Belt in this instance -- or even a location specifically -- it is more with people who are just fanatical. EVERY group has its fanatics that screw up the image for the rest ;)

WARNING....AXO Alum's lefty side is going to emerge momentarily... I am so in agreement with you on this point about the parents. Pretending that this isn't a fact of life, does NOT make it go away. My parents completely sheltered me and I was extremely naive about things related to sex. Even after the big class in 6th grade, I was still like "Huh?" -- because my parents refused to talk to me about it. They were embarrassed about it, and so I took my cue about sex and love from great role models...like Doc on the Love Boat (who was always getting some!) Thank goodness nothing bad ever happened to me -- and the worst part is, that I found out later in life that my mom and dad were pregnant in high school (my dad got drafted and went to Japan so my mom went and had my sister very "quietly"). Now wouldn't one think that if they "got into trouble" (using the old phrase for it) that they would be the first ones in line to talk to their own kids about it?!

So pull out your score cards folks, and chalk one up for the lefty :D

DeltAlum 03-04-2004 11:33 AM

At least some sanity has prevailed:

"But cookie sales have skyrocketed this year as many people bought cases just to show their support for the Girl Scouts, said Becky Parker, a troop leader who is the cookie distributor for Waco-area troops.

"People thought the boycott was ridiculous and was one man's extremist views," Parker said.

It's sad that "grownups" screw up little kids to support their own agenda.
