This is a standard administrative trick: "Gosh, the faculty wanted to defer a whole year but I talked them into only one semester." Truth is the faculty don't have any more power to determine when & with whom you can associate with than you can abridge their 'academic freedom'. If the alumni have talked to the VP and explained the extreme economic hardship, and still get no relief - then the wrong alumni have been doing the talking. I promise you: set up a meeting with the VP, a local judge and several attorneys representing the chapters. Explain how enforcement of such rules would bring Federal civil rights issues into play, and how the University might be liable for economic damages. Ask if the faculty is willing to accept liability for the losses. You'll be amazed at the sudden rush to cooperate and compromise.
What Firehouse said. The only potential exceptions are private colleges in New England, because many of these institutions vest far more power in their faculties.

Another UM (Flint) problem...

Another UM (Flint) problem...

If anyone would like to help me stick up for Local Sororities and Fraternities please send an e-mail of concern to the following addresses:

jhogan@umflint.edu (University Relations)
khoppe@umflint.edu (Student Activities Coordinator)

They are trying to kick all of the local Greek organizations off of campus. The two local Greek organizations that are left, Alpha Theta Chi Sorority and Kappa Delta Xi Fraternity, are the oldest Greek Organizations on campus. They are trying to force both organizations to affiliate with National organizations, which is never going to happen.

I would greatly appreciate anyone's help!!!

No Problem

If it's a state university you have no problem. Go to the yellow pages and find any civil rights attorney. They'll love the case; they can get publicity for themsleves and monetary damages from the school. Most of these rogue administrators do these things out of arrogance, ignorance, or out of the belief that no one will challenge them. Don't bother going to the VP of anything. Have your attorney call the university general counsel. Trust me. One phone call will stop all of it.

Good for you! :)

Does anyone know where I can find information in print to back this up?

I'm not normally a huge fan of the ACLU, but you may want to give them a try. Couldn't hurt
