Phi Sigma Sigma - Beta Mu (1952)
Zeta Tau Alpha - Alpha Chi (1924)

This list makes me sooo sad!! :( First off..... I love Gamma Phi!!! And I had no clue that Alpha Chi Omega was here, or Phi Sigma Sigma. I think Alpha Chi Omega would do well here, b/c of its music background. Or maybe that's just b/c I"m in TBS and know bunches of SAI girls.:p

I think ZTA came back in the 70's or so.....b/c on the UK NPC where they list recruiting and all that they are listed til the late or early 80's. But I could be wrong.

No. That's my chapter. We're closed. We closed at the end of the fall semester 2003.

It is sad. I believe that Alpha Xi is UK's first NPC GLO. :(

My understanding is that the Alpha Xi house is owned by the university. Do you know if Alpha Xi has a year to "recolonize" or "come back" otherwise they relinquish any right to the house and it "returns" to UK?

Since a few fraternities either do not have housing or have a dorm floor, I'm sure any of them would be biting at the chance to get it. And being in the middle of the Sororities would be quite a recruitment draw. :D

I believe that Zeta Tau Alpha closed Spring 1990; Gamma Phi Beta closed 1982; Alpha Chi Omega closed 1977; Phi Sigma Sigma closed in the 1960's or early 1970's.

Not being at UK, I'm not sure, but I drive by all the time... I don't think that a frat will go into a sorority house because they are still building for sororities to have homes. What frats don't have houses? I have never heard of a UK Frat not having a "house" they just may not be in the "six pack".

As to oldest... I though AGD-Epsilon chapter was established in 1905 not 1908. That would make it oldest but all the sites that once listed dates are not open right now. I'm at work so I don't have a new member book with me either... another AGD have your book handy?

I also though that AGD was located at one of the Mississippi schools?

Last I heard, Delta Sigma Phi didn't have a house. Pi Kappa Phi had a dorm floor. And with respect to Phi Delta Theta, I've heard the following. a.) They do not have a house; b) they have a house; or c) they meet at a house that members happen to rent - i.e. not an "official" chapter house.

You may be right. However, a few things I've read have Alpha Xi as the first NPC chapter. Just a guess, but perhaps the Epsilon chapter of Alpha Gam was a local social group first - started in 1905 - then it became a chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta in 1908. Just a guess.

I thought all the NPC sororities had houses. And that Phi Sigma Rho is the only sorority without a house.

TigerLilly 02-23-2004 07:12 PM

AXiD was first sorority at UK...by about 5 minutes. I don't know which sorority came next, might have been AGD, but I know that AXiD beat whoever it was in the race to get their charter turned in first.
All NPC sororities there are housed. Phi Sigma Rho is unhoused, but I don't believe they are looking for a house. There's also CERES, but I don't know anything about them.
You are correct, TSteven, there are several unhoused fraternities. I don't know what will happen to the AXiD house next year, but I know I'll be sad to not be there...

I can't remember the exact year, but our Theta Theta chapter at Mississippi State was resolved a few years ago.

Ceres (or is it CERES - all caps?) has or use to have a house on Nicholasville Road. Across from the College of Agriculture.

I would guess that both Phi Sigma Rho and Ceres would be too small for the Alpha Xi Delta house if it became available.

Now with the new Sigma Chi and Sigma Phi Epsilon houses across/next to the sorority circle, why not give one of the un-housed fraternities a crack at Columbia Terrace. It would really liven things up! :D

I always thought Alpha Gam was, b/c they go by the slogan "oldest house on campus"?? And our AGD chapter is the oldest AGD, which is kinda cool - :) !

No, Alpha Xi Delta was the first. I think KD was pretty close behind them (although not under that name)...not sure when AGD came to campus.

As far as ZTA being at UK in the late 70s...yes, they were, because my chapter has a trophy from the ZTA Gong Show or something from, like, 1979.

All the NPC sororities at UK are housed; however, not all the fraternities are.

GtownGirl98 02-24-2004 09:49 AM

What was the construction behind Sorority Houses all about last year? I understood that not all of the sororities had housing at that time, that was why they were adding a few. Next time I head to Nicholasville I'll have to journey through town and view the sites. I should have rented a room in the AGD House at UK my senior fall because I lived at the WTY library sooo much.

After much tracking down of websites... I found the UK AGD founding date of May 17,1908. KD was present on campus but as a local Epsilon Omega Delta, they became KD in 1909. As to the date of AXi I didn't find a website with the dates.

I know that most schools let the histories of the chapters fall on the chapters shoulders but with as much information as UK has posted on their Panhell Website I wish they had an official listing of the chapters with charter dates.

Do you mean the construction on Pennsylvania Avenue across from the Delta Gamma house? If so, they are now the new Sigma Chi and Sigma Phi Epsilon houses.

UK Fraternity and Sorority Affairs Statistics Fall 2003

http://www.uky.edu/StudentAffairs/Greek/stats.htm

The date is listed on the far right. However, it only lists the year. Also has info regarding houses.

GtownGirl98 02-24-2004 05:34 PM

Hey Tigerlily, do you have a date for the Alpha Xi founding at UK?

TSteve, so you are in the area also... I don't know street names, except for Rose and High. The construction work I am talking about was going on behind the sorority houses, across from the new library. I know my dad mentioned that some construction for frats was going on because of the six pack houses coming down (at least I think that is the six pack, over by farmhouse and LCA, and Kappa Sigma).

Did you go to UK? You mentioned being Greek at one point, just wondering if you were at UK. You seem to know the area really well, if you don't live in the area.
