The mark of a good cover is that it either brings a new perspective to a piece of music, or honors the artist who previously released it. Jessica Simpson's version of "Take My Breath Away" does neither.

ariesrising has said many things that I feel about "cover" songs. It's like-Don't you have the imagination and creativity to think of something new? Plus, the new version SHOULD take the listener to a DIFFERENT place, not replicate what the original had us thinking or feeling. Unless the singer can (as Simon says) make it their own, they ought leave it alone, because it will NEVER measure up to the original.
The examples of Respect and I Will Always Love You are excellent examples of singers making it their own. Muskrat love was a song the Captain and Tenille (YUCK) made popular-they even performed it for the Queen. It was written and performed by Willis Allen Ramsey. The original, though few have heard it, FAR surpasses the cover. Still C&T made it their own and it sold like hot cakes. |
WoW! Totally different subject than I thought! I thought this thread would be about Jessica's latest attempt to make it to XXX store's shelves with her body cream stuff she showed off on Letterman. JUST ADD SPRINKLES! Ewwww, now THAT'S going too far! LMAO!

Why does every famous actress/singer/heiress these days have to come out with a clothing/handbag/cosmetics line? Come on...pick one thing and do it well...don't be mediocre at several things.

she's not the only one
I got sick when I heard Fred Durst's cover "Behind Blue Eyes."
He is SO not worthy. |
I was on my way to work tonight and I heard the Black Eyed Peas' remake of the old Spandau Ballet hit "TRUE".
I immediately thought of "The Wedding Singer" but then I started thinking about this thread too. |
