Yeah, the No Child Left Behind Act is stupid. For those who don't know, if a Hispanic child comes in the day of the test speaking NO English, he/she will be expected to take the same test as the native speakers of English. The Special Education students are expected to take the same exam as everyone else does. Then, when schools do not do well in such areas, the school is considered "failing."

Schools are expected to make sweeping changes w/o any additional funding from the national gov. ARRRRRRGGGGHHHH as a student teacher, this topic sets me (and the entire education dept. at my school) completely off!

The camera went to one rep from NY I think and it looked like he was asleep.Too funny. One man brought his little girl to the address. Poor thing fell asleep. I see a pattern here.
I just shook my head when he said abstinence is the key to not having sex for young people. Sure let's recall the just say no to drugs campaign of the 80's that didn't stop much either.

I feel bad for Ted Kennedy - I had no idea he suffered from such a severe palsy! Poor man.

For the most part, I liked the SofTU address. I understand that most teachers hate the No Child Left Behind Act, but I liked so much of the rest of it.

I can't wait to read the text - the talking heads are just going to push their own agenda, and probably don't even realize what GWB said yet.

and... to cut funding for schools with students who aren't performing is just nuts. Perhaps they aren't performing because they have large class sizes, kids who are malnutritioned because of poverty, kids who have to walk through gangs on the way to school... A friend of mine has a Down's Syndrome child who will be tested the same as her daughter who has an IQ of 150!

I really think all politicians need to spend a few months in reality to understand what's going on out there.

No clue, but I went through almost two Nalgene bottles (64 oz each) and a can of diet Mountain Dew (12 oz).

The speech was very good. Makes me want him back in office for 4 more years.

I watched the speech on NBC, only because they had the best HDTV coverage. It was awesome seeing the HD panorama shots of the floor, watching democrats crouch while the right cheered, the wrinkles in ted kennedy's face, etc.

the first half of the speech was full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

I think the president really needs to stop taking such an oversimplistic view on the world

I was snarking at Bush during the whole speech. That's what makes it bearable.

And if I played the drinking game with alcohol I'd be annihilated within the first 10 minutes and dead by the end. heh.

is it just me or did Bush he say he was proposing $23 million to drug test kids in school? Whatever happened to smaller government, staying out of our personal lives? 4th Amendment? Why doesn't he use that $23 million in a committment to end child hunger in the United States?

I'm getting a little tired of all these new programs being proposed during deficit times. Bush is ignoring many of the things that got him elected (being fiscally conservative). I can understand military spending -- the war on terrorism, national security, etc.. But all of this other crap!?

I'm under no illusion that Dems will do any better though, so for now, my vote stays with Bush.

But it feels like a choice between dumb and dumbererer.
