I knew y'all would get to this eventually when I saw the Bid Day article posted but I didn't want to be the one to start this. Interestingly, when a rape occurred at a fraternity house (not by a member, though), the newspaper would not publish the name of the fraternity or more than vague details, yet when a sorority girl gets in trouble...It's kind of that "boys will be boys" mentality.
There IS a "drunk bus" on campus-it's called SafeTrips, but it runs at night, so people don't have to walk around alone, and anyway, under normal circumstances people aren't driving drunk during the day. I had to ride it a lot freshman year when my friends lived in the "party dorm" across campus-and drunk, obnoxious people certainly used it. Besides the people who were hit, the people who will most unfairly suffer from this incident are the new Theta members. We don't know yet what the consequences will be, but they could have their Bid Party taken away, etc. New members' unofficial nights out w/ actives in many houses are being cancelled for the time being. Unfortunately, I doubt that incidents like this are as uncommon on campuses as we would like to think... |
vandy_violet,
Thank You for your post! While I have been and vistited, I have not lived there! Your insight is a big help in trying to understand! No One wants to Hear SAny Of This Trash when it comes to Greeks, But, We are always in the spot light!:( |

If -- and I say if, because we don't know all the facts -- an investigation about violating an NPC Unanimous Agreement is finding evidence of a problem, a good deal of the joy of a centennial celebration can be shattered. |
I'd rather no name be mentioned until the investigations were done, but hey I'm no journalist.

It's unfortunate that one member's poor judgment has such a detrimental effect on an entire chapter and Greek Community.

True, an investigation had to be done, but even after the name could be released, the newspaper did not cover the story in the way that it has covered this one. I definitely think that this incident is wrong, and I would not drink and drive, but I think that to some degree there will always be a "boys will be boys" attitude about things that college guys that are frowned upon for the girls.

Update from "Hustler" 1/23/04
The student paper has a followup story (Jan. 23) with comments / views of Vanderbilt Greek life officials, Panhellenic, and others. The story says three sororities are being investigated, and there are expressions of concern for students' lives and health. The Thetas' "Centennial Ball" has been canceled.

just a slight hijack.
But champagne can only be called champagne if it is from the Champagne region in France...otherwise, no matter how expensive it is, it is still sparkling wine. okay, end of hijack. Oh yeah, don't drink and drive. ETA: I think Tom actually asid the same thing, but since I don't speak Earp, I though I would put it in English. |
Just curious
When I picked-up a copy of the Hustler (yes, that is the REAL name of the student paper...), I wondered about Skyy Vodka...What is it? MrSilver did not know either....

"HUSTLER", suprised Larry (Porno) Flint has not sued or vice versa! :D
It seems, that the problem here is that People were drinking, DA! But because they were members of a "Soroity", they should not be drinking and celebrating their good fortune. If you go by all of the rules and regulations, then Drinking, smoking, and having sex is bad!:o Well, then we all sue food joints for being Larger than the Govt. lines of weight to height rules! We are held to higher standards than the Independents as We are "Supposed" to be above everyone else when WE are just individuals who are with a Group/Organization with Greek Social Letters. We as Greeks Have More Stringent Rules and Regulations than anyother Groups on Campus! I have often wondered when Strong Independents bad mouth Greeks that they become a member that the Tune is Changed? HI, I am and independent, I graduated from School. I have no leadership skills but I graduated!:( |
