Just yesterday, I was a little  because I knew we would have to go to work on Monday. When I got in to work this morning, I had an e-mail from my boss saying that we had the day off!! Now I can take time and ENJOY participating in one of our Service Projects. I won't have to rush during my lunch break! ;)

My girlfriend lives in Oklahoma - it is not a holiday there.
I am amazed that something we (when I was in college) fought so hard for is taken for granted as "just another 3 day holiday" by some and yet still not observed in many states. As an aside...my mom got a cd as a favor from a friends birthday party - she didn't realize that Stevie Wonders "Happy Birthday" was originally written in support of establishing MLK's birthday as a holiday. I made her listen to the words....she doesn't listen to "secular" music and never knew where that "new version" of Happy Birthday came from. |

In my state, schools have the day off. But, some workplaces give their employees the choice of taking MLK Day or Presidents Day off. |
Well I work for a bank so of course I have the day off. I know the Universities here in Ohio have to day off. I am going to say it is a state holiday here!
Also as a side note my university doesn't give us the observed presidents day off we take the day after as presidents day due to the fact we have MLK day off. The reasoning behind this choice is both holidays typically falls on a monday and they don't want us to miss to much of our monday classes. |
I'm not sure in CA, all I know is I had to work. Then the managing partner sent out an email saying we could leave at 3pm.
"Oh thanks youse massa', you evah so generous sah!" Was that response he expected. Guess what tightwad, I'm on salary, and I already put on clothes that need to be taken to the cleaners. If you want to "honor" the holiday, then just give us the day off, or acknowledge that you're a tightwad and move on. The silver lining was that so many other people have the day off that the commute wasn't bad :) |

Yes, it was made a State holiday in Minnesota in 1987. But only government offices are required to be closed. School Districts have the option, but if they do not close they do something to commemorate the day.
|
It is a state holiday in Georgia (it bettah be!!), but then again so is confederate memorial day.  My job was also closed.
BTW, a state holiday simply means that state government offices are closes. Local municipalities still have jurisdiction on whether or not it will be a holiday and school boards have the final say so in whether or not a school is closed. Bank and post office closure is because of the federal holiday. You know the banks get every holiday! LOL |

I think this was the case in Louisiana until last week. |
