I am new to this, but on our HBCU campus the "yard" had two meanings refered to the school in its entirety, such as, "there are no Sigmas on the yard". We also had an area, which contained sorority and fraternity plots that was also the yard, where Greeks hung out, talked, and usually took their picture for the yearbook.

I did attend then University of North Texas, but I graduated in 1993. I went to UT Tyler for my masters degree, and I now affiliate with the Alpha Xi Omega chapter in Dallas.

Ok, I'm a Bison....
The "Yard" is the place on main campus, affectionately known as 'The Runway'. At mainstream universities it would be referred to as the Quad. It's the center of campus where you can see a large number of the buildings where you would take your general classes, our historic Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel, the libraries and the Blackburn Center. Blackburn is the closest thing we have to a student union. Feeling the Blue & White Love Today, SC |
I attended Cornell University and we used the term "yard" in a a conceptual sense )i.e. "we have the Alphas, Kappas and QUes on the yard...") and some one going to campus would say wither I am going to camous or I am going up on the yard but the actual physical locations all had their own name. (the arts quad, the ag quad, the Helen Newman field, Libe slope, etc.)

Our "Yard" is officially the Main Quadrangle so again "quad." So I guess we have both.!? http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif |
