The beef industry could lose $15 billion the Bush administration told Congress in 2001 according to this article.

Okay now that I have gotten that off my chest I have a question or observation-

If I was a terrorist who was trying to bring down the "great capitalist satan blah blah blah" infecting some cattle with the disease would be the way I would go. BSE is realtively common outside of the devoloped world, and probably damn cheap to aquire, transport, and deploy. Think about the easy it would be to penetrate the "security" of some processing plants, or even cattle herds. Also think about the impact to the public opinion, the beef industry, international trade, and the "American way of life" (got to watch them burgers).

And of course Canada gives us mad cow disease. Hey thanks retard.

Beef prices going down! I'm on Atkins, so I eat a lot of meat. This is, perversely, good news to me

Yes, but so are corn prices. Not good for me or other farming families...

And to think, Oprah was sued for having people on her show indicate that Mad Cow could happen in the U.S.

Sorry RA, but how do you like your crow cooked? Appears, as Rudey points out, that the cow in question came from Canada.

Judge ye not...

Sorry, but there is no prrof that the cow came from Alberta.

Well the tag that was on the cows ear said it came from Canada, proof enough for me.

Peaches-n-Cream 01-01-2004 08:02 PM

According to the New York Times:
Quote:

Meanwhile, investigators were trying to pinpoint whether the first U.S. case, a Holstein dairy cow in Washington state, had the same feed source as the Black Angus cow in Alberta, Canada, discovered early last year to have the disease. The Black Angus, which was born in Canada, was Canada's second case of the disease. The first infected animal found in Canada, in 1993, had been imported from Britain.

DNA tests were under way in both countries to determine if the Holstein was born in Canada. Results were expected next week.

Well just because it came from Canada, doesn't mean it came from Alberta.

Um...

Don't remember mentioning Alberta. Doesn't matter to me anyway.

My not so subtle point is that RA is always quick to jump on the United States, and this time there might have been a little "Hoof (foot) in Mouth" involved as well.

Having said that, his point about the same "spokesperson" having to take the opposite stance in the same kind of situation is probably correct. The same could be said for the spokespersons from other countries in similar situations as well. That's part of public relations -- especially on a national level.

Let it go. This isn't a situation of others being smarter as much as it is of him not being competent. Time after time he posts garbage as facts and when confronted can't reply. He enjoys having everyone having a negative image of his abilities. At the end of the day he's about 95 and still in college - that says it all.

No, you didn't say it. However, the news is saying that your government believes the cow came from Alberta.

What news do you watch, read, or listen to?

I ask because I haven't heard or read Alberta mentioned specifically. I have heard and read Canada mentioned generally. :)
