Why would they take out his sweat glands?

If I'm not mistaken dogs don't have sweat glands per se, they pant to get rid of excess heat, that's why when you're out with your dog and it is 90 degrees and 90% humidity you should pour cool/cold water on their bellies so they can cool off (large surface area from which water can evaporate to cool the blood, similar to putting cold water on your neck or wrists to cool off faster)

I've never heard of a bulldog's (or Uga's) sweat glands being removed. How can it be done? They're all over the body!

In Dogs With Jobs, they showed his air conditioned dog house & how he relaxes on a huge bag of ice during the games.

I also own a bulldog, Peaches (she is from Georgia).

I agree with everything kdonline said. Bullies are often inseminated and deliver csection. When your female costs so much $$, and you pay huge stud fees for a good line- you don't want to risk a still birth or injury to the mother during delivery.

We also had a male with an incredible pedigree. We had to sell him, our landlord threatened to evict us. The breeders that wanted to buy him wanted sperm counts before they would purchase him. His price as a breeding dog was too high w/o samples. Poor Brutus couldn't preform for the vet, so we sold him to a college girl as a pet.

As far as sweat glands being removed-- I wonder if they mean anal glands. Our female, when young, would let off this horrible odor (not gas)-- it was oily and smelled soooo bad. We would take her to the vet to get the gland expressed, but it is hard to milk the gland in a dog with a docked tail. We opted to have the gland removed. Simple surgery and no smell.

kdonline--the wedding pic w Nigel is too precious!!! Mr amycat and I were planning on getting a basset hound, but ^%$# that, when he gets home tonight, I am telling him the plan has changed-- I NEEEED a bulldog! :)

I have done many bulldog C-Sections and they are not fun. They are a huge anesthetic risk due to the shape of there nose (short) and many have elongated soft palates. We have had bulldogs give birth naturally but mortality rate is high in the puppies (had one give borth to all 10 puppies naturally and all puppies were dead due to the long labor). I think bulldogs are cute but they are a genetic nightmare and personally i think the breed should die out b/c of all of their problems.

Dogs due not have sweat glands-that is why they pant. They also sweat through their feet -through the pads.

Anal glands can be removed.

Well, I have to admit - Nigel wasn't REALLY in that photo! I just couldn't trust him to not slobber on me!

As for the anal glands, yep, that's probably it. BW, I believe all dogs have the anal glands. I first learned about them when I was in college & my doberman got sick. He "expressed" the glands all over the vet's office. Apparently, this happens when dogs get nervous/stresses. They are naturally expressed when a dog "goes."

BUt Nigel has problems in that area too. That's why it's worth it for me to take him to the groomer. They take care of that - and Nigel is a much happier dog! I'm just glad I don't have to do it!

(There are "signs" when a dog needs his glands expressed - s/he will "scoot" on its rear end..)

I have a big spot in my heart for all cats and dogs. I can't go to the humane society without wanting to take every one of the pets home with me. Just looking at the dogs on your website, I am crying.

UGA is by far the BEST college mascot in the US. I also own a bulldog, and they are the best pets. I would love for Winston to walk down the aisle at my wedding since I consider him "my child." But I am sure that my mother would no sooner let that happen over her dead body, and I am still single.

Nigel is the second cutest bulldog I have seen. Winston being the cutest! ;)

PS - Amycat 412 ~ My parents also have an English Mastiff, Merlin, who weighs over 200 pounds. I can't imagine him and Winston walking me down the aisle. I am sure your Mastiff would have been adorable! They are so much fun to have around!

Yay for you!!! Being a broke-a$$ college student, I can't afford donations, but I donate my time at the local animal shelter whenever I can.
My dog had the anal gland problem, too. Hers kept getting stopped up. Sometimes, the problem can be fixed by giving the dogs more hard dry food in their diet, as opposed to wet food. That worked for my dog.

And, so I'm not completely off-topic...My Wildcat would eat your little UGA bulldog for breakfast!!!
