The NIC basically skirted around the issue by just simply stating that they "support an opportunity for every fraternity to be on every campus." They did not state that said resolutions are mandates and I have an article written by another VP of the NIC which states said resolutions are purely suggestion.

I also think that this many fraternities and everyone survives is based around a philosophy that a chapter can die out and just be rebuilt. But our campus has special conidtions, we had three ~100 year old local fraternities who are part of the university tradition. One died last year.

So when nationals die, they can be brought back, when locals die they cannot. This has to be factored into our decisions.

Tony,

Good morning and thanks for your email.

The NIC has a very clear position on expansion...we support the
opportunity for every fraternity to be on every campus. We believe that with that opportunity a Greek community will grow. Frequently, IFC's worry that there are only a certain number of men who will join a fraternity. Research doesn't support that belief.

...

My best,

Jon Williamson
Executive Vice President of the NIC

I might take a little different look at this archangel.

When I was active, my chapter was in a similar position. We had been a colony for 2 years and were not having much success in recruitment. IFC wanted to add another group.

After much discussion, we decided we'd go along with it.

Fast forward 2 years into the future... With the addition of this group and the reinstatement of another that had been operating outside the confines of IFC for a few years, rush numbers hit an all time high. We signed our second largest candidate class ever this fall.

Sometimes new organizations are exactly what a sick and shrinking Greek system needs. To some degree, I think survival of the fittest is a good way to look at it. If an old chapter's tradition and alumni connections can't save it and a new chapter of another organization is able to have great success, which is more deserving of success? The one that had all of the advantages and chose to do nothing with it? Or the group that created its own advantages?

I can see why the NIC believes what it does. If you take an open minded look, I think you'll see that it makes pretty good sense.

Yes, I understand the logic, but the IFC MUST be free to make this decision on its own.

IFC Is Not The Authority

Public university: IFC does not have the authority to keep any fraternity from organizing on campus; they do have the authority to determine who can join IFC.
