>>>I don't agree with the rule that alot of fraternities and sorority chapters have that they CANNOT cut a legacy for any reason<<<
I dont think many NPC groups have this rule. I don't know about them all, but the NPC sororities that I do know about are obligated to give some sort of "special consideration" to legacies. Many are like AOII, where the legacy must be invited to the first invitational party, and if they are invited to pref, then they must appear at the top of the bid list. They can be released, however, after the first invitational round. A chapter may have a local policy that they do not release legacies, but I don't believe that is really the national trend. |
I agree with you, aopinthesky -- Chi Omega's legacy policy is very similar to what you stated. I know for a fact that if our chapters were "forced" to pledge ALL of our legacies that number would be more than quota on some campuses!

I heard of a legacy (not at my school) of a big national sorority who got released after the second invite round (as in just not invited to pref. night). The other sororities released her b/c they thought she was deffinetly going to go where she was a legacy (or that's what was conveyed to me). The girl got NO pref. night invites, and she was (from what i hear) an awesome girl. She took part in informal recruitment at her school last year, and actually ended up pledging another chapter. I know that the other sororities were shocked that the original group didn't take her b/c she was the ONLY legacy at the school. very strange.

Even if a pnm is a legacy for another group, if we want her, we try our hardest to get her...unless she has made it defintely clear she wants them and not us! As previously stated on numerous occasions, legacies don't always WANT to pledge the relative's group. This could also apply to when another GLO's "friend" rushes...maybe she wants some new friends!;) :D |

Aopiinthesky, our legacy policy is basically the same as yours. They must be invited back once, but are not to be "led on". If everyone HAD to invite every legacy back to every party, then bid lists would just be legacies - and heaven help the legacy with a last name that starts with "W"!! |

>>>hmm...are you from the south or where Greek Life is HUGE?<<
That policy holds for all AOII chapters, regardless of size (or location) - it is not a north/south issue at all. However, NutBrnHair is correct, there are large greek systems where they have 50 or 60 legacies going through and quota is about the same. Obviously if the chapter takes all their legacies they won't be able to take anyone else. |

Well, that's why a forum like this is good so you can see that there are different issues on different campuses and one can begin to understand the challenges faced by others.

I only know how University of Michigan does rush. At UofM, (since I am an AlphaGam) my chapter would only know which girls are AGD legacies. Unless a PNM tells us she is a legacy of house XYZ, we do not know if a woman is a legacy at any house. I am wondering if in other systems when a woman registers & her information is distributed to all the chapters, if everyone would know she is a legacy at one house or another. Example, when I have a daughter(which will be a LONG time from now) she would be an Alpha Gam legacy. When she registers to rush & writes that she is an AGD legacy, would that info be released to all chapters or just AGD at other schools? If she went to UofM and the system remained the same, AGD would be the only house to know she was a legacy and the girls in, say AXO (one of my friend's houses) wouldn't know that she was a legacy elsewhere. my best friend goes to Central Michigan. the same applies there. only the women know if the legacy is of thier own chapter. But at CMU, its a small school and all the houses are friendly so people find out by word of mouth. Also, if a PNM behaves badly/is rude to try to get cut ALL the chapters find out and usually those women end up cut EVERYWHERE. |
Yes, Designergal3, many campuses include that info on their Panhellenic Registration form, which they release to all groups. Sometimes it works in the PNM's favor because if she has a Greek "family background" she might be pre-disposed to be a good member. I know there can be the problem of groups deciding she'll join her legacy -- and not give her a chance. Personally, I always found it challenging to rush another group's legacy. We need to educate our chapters that they should never stop rushing a girl they are interested in -- no matter her legacy ties.

Just to further explain the UCF applications:
When Zeta receives Annie Applicant's application, we will be able to see the name of the person who she is a legacy to, how they are related, and the chapter this person is from. All the other sororities will receive an application that has "Applicant is a Legacy" over the section that has the legacy information. |
UCF - Is this a computerized app? A lot of places I've seen say for the rushee to make x amount of copies once they have it filled out and send them to the Panhel office - I would hope some poor person there doesn't have to black all that info out!!
|
The PNM's will fill out the information on the application and turn it into Panhellenic. Panhellenic will then make 2 copies per sorority. The Rho Gammas and Pan Exec are the ones who sit there and black out the information on all the applications. Not only do that they have to black out the legacy info but they also black out the PNM's phone number (for good reasons!). They also sit there and go through every application and make sure that the PNM provided accurate information. We've seen a few applications where the girl has written in that she had a 1450 SAT score and there will be a big line through it with the score of 1150 written next to it by Panhellenic. :)
