Thanks! If you want some more cool history about the Civil War, and more Beta facts - such as the Beta Founder who's life was spared by the enemy (while they killed the farmer who housed him) and a story about Alan Battle (Alpha Chapter-roll #100), check out this .pdf file:

I know we have a whistle. I can't whistle so I just yell "YOW" or "DUDE"

dzandiloo 08-23-2003 05:35 PM

We have a whistle, but very few know about it...

I heard GFB has a whistle. They're cool.

Since when?

Reminds me too much of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity's call.

I'm from Richmond and graduated from both U of R and VCU. A few years ago, some IFC fraternity at VCU did the "YOU KNOOOOOW" at this meet-and-Greek event.

All of the NPHC members were like:

DO has a whistle, but like someone else said, I wouldn't use it to get a sister's attention. It's more a piece of historical knowledge, now.

Pi Phi has a "yell" but I doubt too many people know it. My chapter used it at the end of our spirit song, but I think we're the exception. Most chapters now want something quicker to shout.

I don't know since when -- I pledged as a junior in fall of 2001.

I wouldn't have made it up....

Of course, you're not making it up  That wasn't the point.

So, do you NOT know how long Phi Mu's been doing the call?

Okay, fine

Clearly it's probably something just her chapter does...And with so many greek orgs is it really that hard to believe that one might be similar to/the same as another? Attitude...

Uh...I asked a question and she rolled her eyes.

If a GLO takes an NPHC orgs' call, it's going to raise OUR eyebrows. We just don't do that and it has nothing to do with the number of greek orgs.

But, I'm sure she can speak for her organization better than you can.

I'm sure she can too, but speaking as a GLO member in general, I really doubt anyone was purposely trying to "steal" an NPHC group's call or anything, you know? They probably didn't even know someone else uses it.

Surely you jest.

I'm sure her chapter 1) knew it was Phi Beta Sigma's call AND 2) thought it would be "cute" to borrow it.

But, either way, I'm not even going down this road. I'm making a U-turn because I just wanted PhiMu to answer how long they've been doing that call.

She doesn't know, which means she needs to learn the history behind her chapter's traditions, so the discussion's over

Surely I am not the only one who thinks that "Since when?" is not at all interchangeable with "When did that practice begin?"

"Since when?" means "You're full of BS, and I'm calling you on it."

>Uh...I asked a question and she rolled her eyes.

You don't say "Since when?" when you are neutrally seeking information. It is a challenge. Which is fine, but there's no point pretending you just "asked a question" and HotDamn rolled her eyes out of nowhere.

It's not difficult to imagine that two different groups could independently come up with the call, "You knooooow!" If it were a unique phrase like "Skee-wee!" then you could assume it was borrowed, but you just can't make that assumption about "You knoooow!"

Here we go again, the race card has been played. There really is no need to segregate GLO from NPHC.

You said this, you rolled your eyes first, no you did, we have this call, no they had it first...blah blah blah.

Who friggen cares?

PS, what does Johnny Knoxville say to Wee-Man when he is being pulled behind a boat? "Skeee-weee"

To me, "since when" means "since when." Apparently PhiMu mistook what I meant as did the rest of you. But, I was only talking to PhiMu, so I'm only concerned with HER understanding what I meant.

I KNOW group(s) outside of PBS use that "call." In my previous post I said I had heard it used by one of the groups. So, it was never about my thinking she was lying.

Like I said, I'm going based on what I know of the GLO scene in Richmond, VA. If PhiMu is a product of that scene, I'm thinking my hunch is correct, that that "call" was borrowed from PBS.

Thanks for participating.....
