Pledges are blindfolded and captions read: "During pledge week, any morsel of food is worth fighting over." Another picture shows sisters standing over the pledges during a "Pledge Nap". Smells like hazing during pledge week, Alex because it doesn't look like they were out praising God! |
What I mean is: If you took pics of any series of team building activities, and put funny captions on them it would look hazing.

anyone report them yet?
i remember seeing those aaa pics like 2 years ago. wonder how they get away with it all cuz it seems all the "greeks" on that campus do it. and i think a few of them are coed too. |
I learned something in college about cultural relativism (or something).....
There was an organization on my campus that required social probation and a dress code as a condition for membership. Hey, it's not me to judge whether or not social probation is hazing IF THE SCHOOL SANCTIONS IT. If those organizations "haze" and the school allows it, then hey...none of my business. They are voluntary organizations. I think where we as Greeks need to step in is IF individuals going through Faulkner's pledge weeks WANT help in fighting the system. It's going to come from within. Until then, I'm not going to comment on whether I feel they are hazing, because that would mean I am judging that school's rules by my own standards. It's also relative whether or not I feel the pledge pictures should be on the web. On one hand, as a Christian school, they probably don't want to seem like a "secret" society, so maybe that's why the post the pictures. Personally, I think that detracts from the element of surprise which makes a pledge process special, but again, that's their judgement call. |

I know several people (male and female) who attended a private Church of Christ school. They were all a member of various social groups. The college would not allow National GLOs on campus, but they had their own local social groups.
From what my friends told me, these pictures aren't suprising. At their school, there is one week that is "Pledge Week" for the whole school. I'm not sure of the selection process, but at some point you decide to join QVC or The Kings or whatever the group was called (most of them didn't have greek letters). Then, during Pledge Week, all the pledges wear whatever the members tell them to, do embarrassing stuff on campus and god knows what off campus. Then, at the end of the week, you are initiated or whatever they do, and you are a member! The end, or beginning..... One male group had their official yearbook picture taken in front of the county detention center (it was actually pretty funny) The school schedules the Pledge Week either halfway thru the fall semester or during spring semester (can't remember, but it's not right at the beginning of school) so the freshmen get a chance to see what the orgs are about, etc. So as far as I can tell, these pictures are accurate for several religious campuses for that time period (late 90s-2001 or 2002). Don't know if things have changed or not. (Doesn't make it right, but there it is). |
Keep in mind that alot of what is now considering hazing activities are relatively harmless. That they are officially banned is generally because somewhere and some when something bad happened.
Or someone got disgruntled and complained. |
One thing to think about when we call something hazing.. Hazing is a word that has many definitions. It depends on your state, campus and organizational rules/laws. What is hazing in one place is not in another.
So whether or not this is hazing pictured here would depend a lot on their state, local, school and internal laws. If they're posting their pictures online I hope they've done the proper research. Unfortunately for us, they do show a side of Greek Life that our organizations are not proud of. |
I know this is a catty thing to say, but daaaaayum that girl on the top right has a lot of arm hair. (in the Phi Lambda pics)
I'll back up what PsychTau said - I think Grove City basically did the same thing, only one week of pledging but it was really hardcore. It is a Christian college also and very very conservative - to the point that they do not take and will not allow their students to accept any federal or state funding. This means they can do whatever they want. At any rate, if you look at most of the Greek sites for religious schools with local systems, the pledge period is often only 2 weeks at most. They're not putting up with a semester of crap. And truthfully, on these pics I can't even figure out what they're doing so I don't know how I could call it hazing... |
