Oooh, can I rant too?

1) Don't tell me about children "It's different when they're your own." I don't want kids. KappaStarboy doesn't want kids. Why is it okay to not want everything else in the world, but God forbid I should say that I have no desire to have children?

2) Just because I am a librarian, that does not mean I've read every book ever published. And I know I look like I'm about eighteen (I'm 26), but the fact that I moisturize and work out does not mean that you know how to do my job.

Open letter to parents: Don't do your children's homework for them. The way the parents in the community I serve act, you'd think all their kids were blind in one eye and missing an arm.

I wear scrubs to work and sometimes i go to a restaurant on my way home to pick up food or to the grocery store-I always get asked -are you a nurse or what type of nurse are you-ARGGGGG Just b/c I am a female do not assume I am a nurse, females can be Drs. too!!!!!

I also hate it when male clients think they can run all over you just b/c you are a female. There have been some instances where male clients would only talk to or look at the male technicians-nevermind that the vet. (most of the vets that work here are females)is the one they need to be paying attention to.

I'm taking this Social Science Women's Studies course this summer. We just completed our first test and it covered discrimination in the work place against females.

Did you know that there are places that are far worse off than we? For instance in Mexico in some of the factories they will not hire pregnant women or women intending on having children (even administer pregnancy tests) because it's Mexican law to pay a woman maternity leave. Also since some pregnant women cannot fulfill all duties of their work in factories or labor lines, they will be "wasting pay" that could have gone to someone else.
So in a sense they (these companies) are discriminating on a woman's reproductive rights.

But as far as all your arguements (ladies), I can completely relate and understand. My eyes have REALLY been opened since starting this course. I had an argument with my friend/coworker about how women are still paid less for the same work. She complained that you have to look at all the statistics...that you have to compare salary to salary know what their vacation/time off packages include etc. She missed the point. Women are still underpaid or discriminated against.

It is TRUE that many employers assume that a woman getting pregnant may not come back to work or be able to fulfill her job duties.

Oh, this is definitely walking down idiot memory lane. I could just scream thinking about this incident!!! When I was in graduate school, I had a cohort that had an experience those assumptions about women. I heard that she was at a (male) professor's office having an intellectually provoking conversation. She was talking to him about possible thesis, paper or comp topics. When she finished, the professor had some nerve to say to her face 'Gee, you are smart for a woman'. When I found out about it, I thought that some would have to pick my jaw up from the floor. The sad thing was that this ape was our professor for half a semester. We learned that he didn't tolerate young people, especially young women, who are as intelligent as he was. Does this mean that in order to survive in his lectures, I have act like Alicia Silverstone in Clueless? We gave the dept chair complaints about him. If he didn't like to teach women, who asked him to teach at a co-ed school. AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!

Men veterinarians have higher saleries in general than women vets (I call it the "dick salary or contract")-there have been several articles about it in JAVMA (Journal of the American Veterinary Association)-it seems though some women don't care b/c of the attitude:"I'll just live off my husband".
That is so annoying for the rest of us who don't have husbands or that don't want to liver off of their salary. Until women change their attitudes and demand more it probably won't change. There are also a lot of "old school" men veterinarians that still treat women like second class workers-I can't wait until this breed retires.

I know how you feel. I hate going to get the oil changed in my truck, because every time I go in there, the guys at the desk are condescending and think they can just slip and put that cheap-a$$ Valvoline oil in my truck when I specifically asked for Pennzoil, because they think I don't know anything. Happens every friggin' time! :mad: They don't treat men like that, I've noticed...

OH MY GOD THIS MAKES ME NUTS!!! I get so sick of hearing "when you have kids they have to be your first priority. You will understand when you have them."

Well all I can say is if having kids makes you slack on your responsibilities and blow off your friends 8 times out of 10, I think I'll skip it. I realize there are real emergencies with children, but if every time you plan something you have to cancel because little Squidgy has an earache, I'm going to think you're bullshitting me and using the kid as an excuse to get out of it.

I think it's absolutely ridiculous to hear people saying that mothers are "shirking their responsabilities as mothers" when they want to have a career or a life outside of their families!! People are like, "Well, she decided to give up her life when she had kids." I don't know any mom who wanted to give up her identity to have children!! Kids are a blessing yes, and I'm sure I will love them dearly when I have them, but that should not equate to me not being a person anymore!! Dads are allowed to have jobs, hobbies, and friends, and still spend time with their kids, why can't moms?? Dads are supposed to spend "quality" time with the kids and that NEVER means all day all night and every time they make a sound, why is it that because I happen to have the uterus they came out of, I'm tied to them forever?? I will never compromise myself or my passions just because I decide to have a family. Men have both, so should we!!!!!!!!!

Wow. I'm really glad I'm going to be in a mostly female field (music therapy), but even still I'm sure my interviewers will at some time be male. I just hope they're not pigs like the aforementioned people. I look incredibly young and people even now are asking me when I'm getting my driver's license. My response is always "Five years ago."
My problem is this: Moms who act so damn self-righteous about their kids. Like they're so much better than me because they have them. Especially super young moms (18-24). Most of them had kids out of wedlock, lived off mom and dad, found a man, and now think they're the shiznit. I don't plan on kids until I'm in my late late 20s, and I don't need them asking me almost every day why I don't settle down and have kids. Um, hello it's called a career. And a desire to do more than clean up shit and get stretch marks.

Please don't think I hate kids or have no respect for moms. I really do. But I know I'm nowhere near ready and I don't like people feeling as if they should be determining the course of my life. Seriously, all the moms out there hats off to you. You've done things I know I couldn't do. And kids are cute and a joy and a blessing, especially 'cause I know they're not mine 24/7!
