Grrr!! For the longest time, we had people calling our house constantly and asking for "Horizon Technology". We'd politely tell them that they had the wrong number. The caller would sometimes be so insistant that they had the right number that they'd get all fussy on me.

My father called up the company's main number and spoke to someone about it. It turns out that one of their departments had a phone number that was identical to ours except that the last two numbers were reversed. The supervisor insisted that the mistake wasn't theirs and that somehow, all of these folks were accidentally dialing the right number incorrectly. I'm sorry, but there were just WAY too many people for it to be accidental. So, we started interviewing the callers to find out how they got our number. It turns out that someone at Horizon Technology had printed a typo on the phone list and had faxed out my family's phone number to their customers across the country.

Though we figured it out, the company refused to go back and change the mistake. So, for several more months we had to tell people over and over and over that they had a misprint on their sheet and to dial again reversing the 3 and the 0. Even so, so people were so rude. They swore that, because their fax had our number on it, that we must be lying. One day I got so fed up with this one lady asking for some woman at Horizon Technology. After arguing back and forth with her about whether or not she had called a family home, I finally said "Yeah sure, I'll go get Mrs. So-and-so for you" and put the phone down on the kitchen counter and walked away. I suppose she sat there for a few minutes listening to us prepare dinner before hanging up.

Eventually the calls stopped!!

Juniorgrrl, that magazine subscription thing cracks me up to no end! It reminds me of when I was in college and my friend and I used to mail random stuff to this guy she was dating. We sent him free ugly ass polyester pants in the mail (order now, pay later) in like size 900 and he showed up at her place one night wearing them!!!

One day, soph year of college, Boy and I were really bored - so we decided to send his roomate all sorts of stuff from www.totallyfreestuff.com.

We sent him a Black History Month calendar, some posters of peanuts, some Astro-glide, a Purina Puppy Chow somethingoranother...and he'd go "man, I got the wierdest crap in the mail today!" Finally we fessed up. We still send him crazy stuff every now and then. Just to show we care :D

We used to prank call people with my brother's Pee-Wee Herman doll. You'd pull the string and he'd go "I know you are but what am i?" or "ARRRRG" or "I love you"

Well funny thing here...

First: When I first moved into the sorority house, there was phone service in my room... so I was like cool... and I would call my mom long distance. Well then we kept getting calls for a business... no biggie, but then you would hear another phone pick up and someone answer. They gave us a number thats in use!!! Well I got free long distance for a while... but ahhh!!!

My best friend's number in the dorm was say, x3456. Well to dial off campus you dial 9. Well the pizza place was 345-6789. So when the drunk people would come home and want pizza... they would forget the 9 and dial 3456... and it would ring in her room. She took so many fake pizza orders that year....

My phone number at home was close to a car service. Well at 2 am we would have people calling for rides and my dad got sick of it and would just tell them it would be there in 20 min.

But lately...
One night i get this IM from a girl under my AOL account - AliRae. My away msg said to IM under my AIM name, seeing that when i am home I use AOL to connect. So she IMs me and asks for someone that I dont know... Im polite and say theres no one there by that name. Then she says "Is this Alison 'some name'" and I tell her no. Then she says "Well my friend said she was making this name" and I said "Well obviously she cant cos I have it." And this person had to be like 14 by the way they were typing and also at one point I said something about me being dense... and she said "Denise? I thought you said your name was Alison" Well now she IM me under my AIM name and my AOL name telling me that her friend was going to make them. And then she makes other names and IMs me under them.

I AM SO SICK OF IT! STUPID 14 YEAR OLD!

I IMed back last time and it was finals week... it went something like this:
"I am in collge. I am 22 years old and have finals all this week... I havent slept in a very long time and I am not in a great mood... I am sick of being IMed by you and have better things to deal with than your petty bulls*it, so please stop."

she did so far...

This reminds me of something that happened to my husband. He had just moved into a new on-campus apartment. All the apartments had preassigned phone numbers. So, say his number was (617) 555-1212.

Just down the street was a Polaroid building. Their main line was (800) 555-1212.

So, suddenly my husband is getting all these calls for Polaroid's office on the street he was living on. Apparently it never occurred to some people that in order to dial an 800 number, you first have to dial 1-800.

Finally, he called the people that administer the school's phones, and made them change his number.

When we were little we would prank call Beachy International. All I know is that they were British and we thought their voices sounded funny.

I have been getting calls on my private telephone line for Ginny and Jim Anderson for about 8 years now...as long as I have had the line. Most people get the hint after calling once and are nice. This one woman calls me every single year around the holidays and their birthdays and is IRATE that this isn't their number. She just doesn't get it.

I also apparently "stole" my cell phone from some guy named J, because he gets calls on it all the damn time from his thug friends, who think I took it. I finally called them back on their land line (go free caller ID) and threatened to call the police in their town (I recognized the extension) if they didn't stop calling me.

Heh... me and some of my friends will get weird and prank call our other friends.... uhhmm.... last time I did it we were drunk, and well I'm in some trouble now.

We used to call people (back in Jr High) and just talk to them. One time we called like Taco Bell and Big Boy and told them, excitedly, that there was someone on their roof throwing watermelons (the object always changed).... ok we didn't just do it that time but it was hella funny!

My old cell phone number used to be 502-1612... some dumbass guy's was 502-1216.... he used to go to check his voicemail and always called me! I'd answer at like all hours of the nite and be like "dude u got the wrong number".

My fave time: ok a 3 hour drive from Central Michigan to my area gets boring... soo.... we called my friends boyfriend. I pretended to be someone else and asked him if he could give me a ride to the party that nite, and he said he would have to ask his girlfriend. We hang up, my friend's phone rings and its him and she's like "umm NO you can't drive xxxx to the party!" So I call back and was like so did you talk to her and he goes "yeah I don't think it would be a good idea"... he eventually found out it was us. We did the same thing to my other friend's boyfriend who was at work and it was goin great till he was like "I don't think my girlfriend would liek that" and she screams out in the background "Like hell she wouldn't!"

Fun times.

Ahhh! My friends and I were the queens of prank calling back in the day, we did it ALL the time. Luckily I have calmed down and I never do that anymore. I do vaugely remember prank calling the UNO Sig Ep house last winter break b/c my friend Lee, who is a member of that chapter dared me to. I called the house and said I was looking for a date with a hot guy. I made a total ass out of myslef b/c I didn't figure I'd ever know/see the person on the other end of the line. Too bad it turned out to be this guy I went to high school with! Oh the embarassment. :o

One of my roommates last year prank called the FIJI house and said she was looking for a hot guy who liked to get it on with redheads. Unfortunately for her she told him that she was the only redhead in Phi Mu, which wasn't a big deal since we never did anything with that house anyway. Well then, the next semester we got paired with them for Greek Week and whoever she prank called totally remembered that....yea she got a lot of shit for that one. :)

volgirl2376 05-26-2003 08:19 PM

there was only one prank i used to do back in the day - and we used to almost wet our pants during the phone call from trying not to laugh.

we would look in the local paper at the birth announcements and pick out like "lauren elizabeth, daughter of steve and rachel smith" out, look in the phone book for steve and rachel smith and call them with:

me: "hey! can i speak to elizabeth?!"

parent: "i think you have the wrong number...."

me: "this is sarah from star 102.1 radio station and lauren smith was our 10th caller and won a [insert bands name] prize pack but she hung up before we could get all her information"

parent: "lauren elizabeth smith??"

me: "yes! she was our 10th caller!"

parent: "that is impossible....lauren is only 4 days old!"

of course the confusion on their part was hysterical, and the thought of a baby who was only 4 days old calling anyone on the phone was also pretty funny.

i loved being young and silly. now i am just silly ;)

A friend of mine and I used to call Victoria's Secret and ask them if they had various lingerie items in sizes to fit "a petite feline."

I know that makes absolutely no sense, but I can't even say that sentence out loud without turning into a hysterical, blubbering mess.

tinydancer 05-26-2003 10:41 PM

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Now that's funny!!!

If go to Google and type in your phone number, i.e. 202-555-7639, it will return your name and address and even offer to give you driving directions to your house. Also, AOL White Pages, after searching for a name and city, it will return your phone number and all of your places or residence for the past five years.

You can choose to remove your information from both of their databases. I suggest you do a search and remove your info, you never know who may stumble across it and make your life hell.

OMG, me too. . . as a preteen too. :o

I certainly did my share of prank calls when I was a teenagers. Hey, what else is there to do in a small town when you are 14 or 15?? One of my favorites (with my best friend/cousin on 3 way) was to call some geeky/weird boy and tell him that I had a crush on him. I would call her high school and she would call mine (wouldn't want anyone to recognize my voice). We would tell them to meet us at a sporting event/skating rink, etc. the next week. We would die laughing when they showed up looking for their crush. Now that I think about it, that was really mean!!

I hate people who do the *69 call back thing though. "I received a call from this number." is just stupid. If I had wanted you to know I called, I would have left amessage!!

Speaking of which, I wanted to bring this back to the top becasue I've been getting harrassed by text messages - well, always the phone number without a message. Got 3 today, and 4 on Thursday. This has been going on for awhile, but it stops for several months, and then picked back up last month. I ignored it at first, but Thursday got fed up and called the number back. Of course, they picked up and hung up immediately. Called back and no one ever said hello, then they hung up. So I'm thinking it's kids that are bored and have nothing better to do. Called Cingular to see if there's any way to block certain phone numbers, and they say no. Thought about going to a pay phone to call the number to see if anyone answers. One rep I spoke with said to set up a Hotmail account and send them a message to "cease and desist or legal action will be taken". Now do you really think that they think anybody's gonna follow through with that?

Any other ideas?
