Whats wierd is that tornadoes are NOTHING here. We get them, they just happen so infrequently that no one here understands the danger. The guy on the radio,"theres a report of a tornado, on the ground at 281 & Bitters" My roomate, "Wanna go get something to eat?" I am like wha???

Also, everyone down here thinks every litle ragged cloud was a tornado. I'm like, if it was a tornado, you'd know. You wouldnt be wondering.

281 and Bitters... used to be my old stomping grounds when I lived in ol' San Antone. (I was off Braesview and N. Military, worked right near Bitters where it begins to make the curve into Nakoma on the north side of SAT.)

On the other hand, when it really rains, it pours in San Antonio... you're better off taking a boat to downtown when the Olmos basin floods and cuts off north San Antonio from the rest of town! Yea... tornadoes are rare in San Antonio, but they DO happen!

It was very spooky looking today-- low hanging black clouds--sky had that weird green cast it gets before severe weather. Luckily it only amounted to heavy thunderstorms.
Although my husband was working on the south side of the city--even further south than I live-- they had golf ball size hail. You should see the dents on his truck. We will have a nice hail damage claim.

The weather looks nasty for the rest of the week. Storms tomorrow night and Thursday looks bad too. There are going to be lots of nervous people around here!!

Years ago when we lived in Ohio, my wife called my mom one afternoon to warn her that there was a tornado warning in her area. She lived in a trailer home at the time. Mom said, "Yes, I know, I'm watching it. It just took the roof off the warehouse across the street." My wife was horrified, but no damage at all to Mom's property.

A few years before that, a tornado took out a tree about three feet from one of my uncle's house. No damage whatsoever to the house.

They are wierd storms, for sure.

Here in the Dallas area, the blackland prairie makes it very unsuitable to build a basement or a storm cellar in every home. Over time, the stuff shifts and wreaks havoc with house foundation slabs. On the other hand, more and more houses are being built with 'safe rooms' that will withstand the force of a severe storm or even a tornado.

You can buy those prefab storm shelters that you can dig into the backyard, but if it isn't built right it's prone to flooding.

Where tornadoes are more commonplace -- Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, and even the Texas panhandle -- people tend to take tornadoes much more seriously.
