About getting in a ditch--I imagine it usually works but a few years ago, one of my former Girl Scouts ran from her car to take refuge in a ditch. The storm picked up a tree and dropped it on her and she's now paraplegic.:(

I still just f***ing love it! Hell even the so called experts are still giving different things to do!

Tornados create a vacum and the structure implodes and then is picked up by the spiriling winds and lifted upward! Open windows, but the winds are so strong that it will take a house off of the foundation but leave the Toilet so you can piss your brains out from being so damn scared!

To have any chance, and you do not live in a tornado magnet, Trailor park or shopping center, find the smallest room with the most structuring away from windows below ground level! That is if you do not have a root or storm cellar! Kansasans know what I am talking about!

The best thing to do is grab the cheeks of your ass and hang on before you might kiss it goodby!

If you have ever seen a tornado up in the clouds, the clouds go every which way at once!

Topeka Ks was protected my an Indian Mound and lore had it that Topeka was safe! HAHA, Big T came down the mound took out 1/2 have of Washburn U, and a how lot of Topeka!

If You have a Big T, find a deep hole and get your ass in it! Period!!!!!!:)

when i was 9, i had the local meterologist's autograph. i thought i was so great. then when i got older, i saw all the math and science involoved with studying weather, and i thought 'yeah right'!!!!!!!!!

Which is why I flunked my Intro to Meteorology course at OU... considered the Harvard of meteorology schools. :)

This thread is hitting close to home, in more ways then one!

SarahGrace, I'm from Bellevue, NE (well, lived there since 1991 atleast...Dad in the air force, and then retired and stayed). You remember anything about Bellevue?

I am also attending school at Washburn Univ. The Tornado of 66 took out a lot of Topeka and took a direct path through Washburn's campus. Almost every building was either demolished or badly damaged. The only buildings spared with no damage at all were Kappa Sigma's house (we've survived a tornado, we can survive anything), The Phi Delta Theta house, the old gym, and the current education building - all are still active buildings on campus.

FYI, that weird color happens when there is hail in a storm. Light reflects (refracts? I dunno) off of the hail and the color produced is that sickly yellowish greenish weirdish freakyish color. And since most tornado storms have hail in them, it's common to see that when a tornado is coming.

(I was that kid who always taped the tornado specials off of the Weather Channel. My mom still calls me to tell me when they're on)
