OK. I might have jumped the gun. The quote sounded as if he was saying that HE believed those things. Looking back now, I can see that perhaps he meant that faculty and administrators believe them. However, if Whipple is anti-Greek then he is still wrong in his thinking, even if he is a "major researcher on GLOs and ...issues."

Greeks have real enemies. Sometimes they are our own members and their behavior. But, Greeks have enemies in the academic community too, for a wide range of reasons all discussed variously on Greekchat. These reaon are fundamentally political rather than educational.

I have to admit that I am dismayed at the age and lack of research in this article, although it does have valid points. The author writes: "Despite some attrition during the past decade, more than two centuries after that first Phi Beta Kappa meeting, there remain 67 national fraternities and 26 national sororities — in all, almost a million collegiate members in over 8,000 chapters across the country." There are more that 26 national sororities. Beta Sigma Phi has collegic chapters, the Divine Nine, and mutli-cultural sororities and the like are excluded as well as other fraternities.
Just my thoughts.

i think he was referring to only the NPC and NIC groups, as many of the arguments against Greek orgs made by teh administration referenced in this article 'do not apply' to the multicultural/NPHC groups. the idea that greek orgs lack diversity and are conservative is not what they see the Multicultural and NPHC as being.

i think the article does something that a very small percentage of writing about greeks does-stands up fro greeks and against closing orgs down.

While I am glad that this article defends greek life, I think it is short sighted to think that only NPC and NIC groups have these problems. That was my point. I'm sure administration problems, housing issues, and binge drinking affect everyone.

While this Article is @ 5 Years old it still holds some truths.

There are some Colleges such as Alfred in NY who dismissed All of the Greeks, Local and National there.:(

The main thing that upsets Me is the singleing out of Greeks who seem to be the bad seed on campus and are continually always the problem.

Greek Life is like Life in general, it has its ups and downs.

Sometimes the short sightedness of Academians is beyond beleif.

All each of us have to do is go to our National Web Sites and see Famous Alums in all Fields of Life and see People Who are Greeks.

While We All want to be on Major College Campuses, I would ratehr LXA be on Many More Smaller State Uns and Private Schools than have problems at every major Un. where We are not wanted.

I am not really sure How This researcher can be that big a whoopty Do! But of course it is dated and many things have change. Or have they?

I always Love when someone professes to be an Expert.

As I have said before, and has Firehouse has eloquently put it, far too many academics are holding nothing back when they ferociously attack GLOs. I know the numbers of political and business players in American history are extensive, but I'd like to hear from everyone about the number of Greeks involved with things like Student Government Association, Issues Committees, Alternative Spring Break, and the like. Also, if you have any progrmas for students that you think are unique to your school let me know.

So, basicaly You and I and many others think along the same lines!

Take Greeks out of the Picture on any campus, there is a lot of less participitaion of People in many current affairs, doers and shakers!:D

While Greeks are lucky in being 10 %, they do at least say 75 % on Campus. How close am I?
