I don't know that I think of "period" as the technical cycle anymore--seems like these days we just treat it as an irritating number of days having to deal with extra hygiene. so I'd say having a 'period' in the sense that there's blood and you're dealing with it is possible even if it's not the whole ovulation ordeal; I've read that you can bleed monthly up to like 6 months and have it be normal (I recommend a book called "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" and I think that that's the first thing women should be experts on--their own bodies!!). Prolly lighter than usual though as others have said.

And I must add that I, too, was impressed by that male chronicle of a woman's reproductive cycle :)

If your on the pill, you can still get your period bc the pill regulates it coming and going.
has anyone ever been on the pill and pregnant and did not know?? If so how did you figure it out?? Test??

when you are on the pill you do not ovulate, your "period" is just the shedding of the uterine lining. therefore no egg = no baby. generally the cases of where you hear about people on the pill getting is pregnant are people who forget to take their pills.

She said sometimes she woke up with the urge to throw up, but she attributed it to the fact that she gets migraines quite frequently, and waking up wanting to be sick wasn't uncommon for her. The only thing that she really noticed was the weight gain, and she didn't think anything of that either.

You know how they say that alot of times the side effects of illnesses are a mental thing? This is probably true for things associated with pregnancy as well because after she found out she was pregnant she started having strange cravings, pronounced morning sickness, etc.

Actually, I learned at a genetics conference that it is quite possible to have two babies who are concieved different times and born at the same time. it is not an impossibility at all, in fact, ther's been a case of a woman having triplets by 3 different fathers.

actually, I didn't mean to make it sound like it was a physical impossibility - stranger things have happened - but my intention was to state that it would be borderline commonplace if you could have your period while pregnant. Bottom line: no period while pregnant.

Okay, so you can be pregnant and bleed, but you're not having your period. I see how that can make sense, but by this definition I'm not really having my period every month because I'm not ovulating!?

I'm assuming you want me to say where i learned this from. it's been about 6 years since i went, but i think that the name was Sam Hutchinson. He does (or he used to) do a genetics conference for high schoo kids every year at Raymond Walters College (an offshoot of University of Cincinnati). It was really quite interesting. Genetics was the only science thing i've ever been good at.

This thread is cracking me up. Mostly KSig and hearing about the mom of half-related triplets!

And I hope whoever mentioned "high schoo" kids DIDN'T make a typo... that made me smile too. :)

OH -- I wanted to add that some women get pregnant even though they're taking their pill correctly -- either they're part of the point zero zero whatever failure rater or they took some medicine (antibiotics, whatever) that messed with the reliability of the pill.

I kinda question the idea of being pregnant and not knowing it, though.

As an RN, I can say that I have actually seen women who come to the hospital not knowing what is wrong with them and find out they are having a baby. It is kind of freaky, but yes, it does happen..............

Keep in mind some women who have "surprise babies" are women in their 40s and 50s...women whose cycles have been less than regular for a while, and they chalk it up to premenopause. I guess it's possible for a woman with irregular periods to not miss hers for 8-9 months. I know that there's also "breakthrough" bleeding sometimes during pregnancy--harmless spotting that occurs around the time that a period normally would.

I'm just glad it's not me. I'd hate to go to the doctor for a backache and find out that it's twins.
