To take it a step further, many of the everyday things that we do today (i.e. wearing of make-up, adorning of our bodies with jewelry, etc.) have stemmed from pagan beginnings, but over the centuries their meaning have evolved into what they are in today's society.

Even if the orgins of Christmas were pagan, in today's world for me and my family, we celebrate the birth of Christ, not Mithria (sp). There are things to go on today that have removed Mithria FAR from the picture.

As I posted earlier, the outrageous frenzy of Christmas comes from BIG BUSINESS who only cares about MONEY!! Shoot, I am sure if they figured out how to make money off of Mithria Day, :p you would get a circular advertising the sale this sunday with your paper. :D

I am not sure I understand you when you say my presentation of the history of Christmas because I honestly tried to stay as non-biased as possible. What I relayed was fact not an opinion for the most part. The thing with Christmas is that it wasn't the birth of Christ at all. Christ should have nothing to do with a different religion that its practices condemn. Its differnet with rap because rap is not condemned in the bible, but foreign pracitces and worship of other deities are. My point is that Mitria really isn't that far removed, the traditions we do today to celebrate the birth of Christ are closely related to what people who worshiped the sun did. BUt to each their own. I do agree that a lot of the extra stuff is rooted in money, but thats yet another reason for me personally to stop celebrating the un- holy- day. I hope no one takes offense.

Can you take something wrong and put a God's name on it and make it right?

Well, depends. For example, if I steal your purse (:D) and say GOD told me to do it, then ...ummm nope, that is sooo wrong and I totally understand your point. Now, let's say that Christians took something pagan in nature and changed everything around in such a manner that it's meaning would glorify God, then I would say yes, that's ok as long as none of God's commandments are broken.

I am not not offended or anything like that :) , but I have heard similiar arguments about Christian holidays from some folks before, but yet these same folks participate in other things that detrive from the same "devilish" begininngs. (not saying that YOU do personally, but in general).

I guess I am wondering what part of Christmas is pagan? Are you talking about the use of Christmas trees, Santa, and the giving of gifts or are you talking specifically how Dec. 25 is claimed to be the actual date of the birth of Christ? If you have a website to refer me to, that would be great.

In all honestly NewBee, all in all, it is hard for me to be objective because I am a Christian and I know the even without all the presents, trees, etc. that the meaning of Christmas is still the same....or to me anyways. I know people who do not do the whole tree, Santa thing. They simply put up a nativity scene.

CHRISTmas or just chirstmas

Hi all,

Today is a day that the Lord has made...

I was just wondering how many people celebrates this day, not for Santa and gift giving, but for our salvation, Jesus Christ.

So often people get so wrapped up in celebrating gift giving and good eating but I think it's important that we realize what this day truly represents. Give honor and glory to God and his only begotten son Jesus Christ.

God Bless you all and please have a safe and Merry CHRISTmas.

Just a little side note... did you all know that writing "Xmas" was not created only to make the word shorter. The X is a representation of the unknown and it stemed from people that celebrated CHRISTmas for the gift giving and good eating and not for Christ. So just remember, when you think you're "shorthanding" the phrase please be aware that you're not giving glory to Jesus Christ :-)
