ktsnake, there are studies that show that these 'establishments' bring about other undesirable elements to the communities in which they are housed: drugs, prostitution, gambling and other unseemly activities. Not to mention the degradation of females everywhere. I say kudos to the chapter for taking a stand!

Well said!

I am by no means an expert on small towns, but I would guess that every small town has its own seedy underbelly where countless nasty things go on every day. I don't think that one can point to a strip club as being the source of such things. It might bring them out into the open a little more than they would otherwise be, but am pretty certain that it goes on anyway.

Also, I'm not sure that one can blame strip clubs for the "degradation of females everywhere." Granted, I don't know every woman's circumstances, but I don't think that anybody is holding a gun to a woman's head and forcing her to work at a strip club. IMHO, working at a strip club is a choice that a woman can make or not make, and as a woman and a feminist I support a woman's right to work at a strip club if she so desires. I have a close friend who was considering taking a job at a strip club (she kept asking me for advice and whether I would do it -- I said that no, I wouldn't, but that I would support her in whatever she decided to do).

It's true that I don't particularly enjoy how women are treated as objects in our society, but I still think that every woman has the freedom to choose her own path.

How does having a stip club lead to theft and rape? are you just making stuff up or do you have basis in fact?

I know my small towns... here in Oklahoma 7500 doesn't even really qualify as 'small':D

The fact is though I just don't see these things happening. I can see where you could make certain scenarios up and then attribute them to a strip club.. But people will do stupid things. If out of towners aren't coming in for this reason they'll come in for another.

I don't know if this town is anything like those in Oklahoma but as for drugs, etc... those little towns probably have more drug problems without strip clubs than the big cities do. Law enforcement is underfunded and there is just no way to enforce drug laws out here.

To say that the strip club is going to give way to 'unseemly' activities is something I've never actually seen hard proof over. Drunk driving? Maybe... But you already have a college campus and most likely a strip (if I know my small towns with colleges they tend to have a strip of bars & clubs where students routinely go to blow off steam).. Assuming you have this I really wouldn't expect that much of an increase in traffic and especially drunk traffic.

And of course I'll still stand by my statement that the ladies of AXO could be doing something MUCH more positive for the community than protesting 2 nights a week. Bingo at the Senior center... Teach kids to read... But if a woman wants to take off her clothes to entertain a bunch of adults then what's the big deal?

a fun little Small Town Wisconsin meets Strip Club Fever story..

in Lake Geneva, WI (a small town with a huge Chicagoan-gone-north summer tourism business), a strip club called "The Sugar Shack" has been mysteriously struck by fire not once, not twice, but many times by what police believe to be arson. Each time, the club rebuilds, and each time, it causes an outcry in the community. Many think that members of the community are the true cause of the clubs' string of bad luck.

This time, they built it in brick.
