My chapter name was Gamma Iota and we were always told by our advisor that the correct prounounciation was EE-ota since "an EYE-ota is a small, insignificant thing, and Gamma EE-OTA is not small or insignificant!"

So with that drilled into my head I've always prounounced Iota as EE-ota.

My chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha is Iota Chi, and we pronounce the Iota as "eye-O-tuh", but to each his/her own I suppose.

Lots of people also mispronounce "Tau", i.e. making it rhyme with "towel" or "toe". The correct pronunciation rhymes with "paw" or "saw".

That's really a cute idea, but FYI - the real Greek pronunciation is "YO-ta" ;)

(I know it makes no difference in the GLO world, but you know I like to tease ya! )

Like greeklawgirl, I am also Greek.

My father, who is from Greece, always got a kick when we'd tell him "but this is how ALL the sororities pronounce it!" (my sister & I are both KD's.)

I thought he was going to pass out when I told him our open motto ("Dad, wait till you hear the girls say it with their Southern accents!") & then he would correct me on the translation.

And of course, this would all end up in a discussion of how "this proves that your American founders believed that the Greeks are the greatest civilization and most eloquent, so that they had to create their own elite societies based on Greek! Be proud of your Greek roots, Annie!"

It's no wonder that we laughed out loud during My Big Fat Greek Wedding..
