Miss UM
University of Miami does not have a Homecoming court but this past weekend a Kappa Kappa Gamma was crowned Miss UM. Jenna Edwards will now go on to compete in Miss Florida!:D
There was a nice write up about her in the newspaper today. www.thehurricaneonline.com |
Washington and Lee's homecoming is totally different. Selections are based upon fraternity, sorority, or cultural organization nomination, an interview with faculty/alumni, and a biographical sketch. It's not pageant-like at all. More like a scholarship competition. Two of my sisters are nominated! One is our Pi Phi nominee (duh) and the other is the Sigma Nu nominee. I also have two good friends on the court in other GLOs--one is a Theta and the other is a Kappa. Most of the women on the court are Greek. I'll be sure to let you know who wins tomorrow. Last year it was a KD!
Edited to add: The Pi Phi nominee is being escorted by a really cute Lambda Chi! We have been trying to hook them up forever! Hopefully it will work out as they are both seniors now!!!!! So excited about homecoming (I'm going with a Pike)! |
Since we don't have a football team, our homecoming pomp surrounds basketball.
this year our homecoming queen was an AOTT, and king was in Alpha Phi Alpha. The court was 60% greek, including me. I wonder how we will fare this year. |

Ours is based mainly on scholarship as well. The first round is 30 girls selected solely on applications. This is based on scholarship, community service, and activities. Then, the second round is an interview, and they select the homecoming court from that. 7 girls, 7 guys. And the last part is a pageant, with weight mainly in the talent/interview portion, but some based on confidence, poise, etc... I think it's a really good way to do things, actually

At my school, Homecoming Queen and King was just a one weekend kind of thing where you get pictures taken and show up at the dance. It's pretty much a given (at least back in my days) that greeks would make up the court because in such a large school greeks were the only one group big enough to form a voting block. That's a shame about the PC people freaking out; it's really harmless fun! No results yet for Valdosta but here are the canidates....

KappaKittyCat, I am also in the Midwest and my school doesn't have a Homecoming Court either! Well we do, just not in the traditional sense...they switched it up a few years ago and now you have to apply or be nominated to court and I believe the Union Board goes through the applications and selects something like 20 people to the Homecoming Court...there's no king or queen or anything. I'm not sure what they do but I know they ride in the parade and appear at the rally! I know one of them last year was a SigEp.

We just had homecoming here...normally court alternates between Greeks and housing, this year it was housing. The King, and one Greek represented (out of 10), was a SigEp. The queen works for Campus Programming...I think all the housing candidates were competing heavily against each other, whereas the Greek got all the votes from all the Greeks.

homecoming!!
Well, our court was chosen yesterday!!
The winner is a Kappa, the nominee of Chi Psi. Everyone was rooting for them because Kappa is one of the "top" chapters here and Chi Psi is "not". The King and Queen (the king is just automatically the escort of the Queen, he goes through the interview with her) are the cutest couple and broke a lot of bad Greek stereotypes by dating. Not to mention that she was my DC last year as a freshmen! DCs are like RAs, only more. She was basically my mom last year, and helped me through a lot. She was my Rho Chi too!! So that was amazing! And the runner-up was from my chapter!!!!!! GO PI PHI! She was our chapter's nominee and was escorted by a Lambda Chi. She looked beautiful and represented us so well! We're going to get an ad in the paper to congratulate her! |
well, this year we lost homecoming, a non greek won, however word on the street is that our candidate was the runner up. the system was messed up, b/c popular vote was like 40 percent of the total points, an interview was another 40, and participation was like 10 and something else was 10. so we arent too happy about that. im was also disappointed to see a good friend of mine lose too. shes a Chi O and she worked hard to win, shes a great girl and totally deserved to win, so homecoming was disappointing. :(

We're doing our parade with a local boyscout troop.

Our Homecoming was this weekend. The court is based upon nominations by student organizations, residence halls, etc. You nominate your person and they are your representative. Then they do 2 days of voting to narrow it down to the top 5 finalists, and then 2 days of voting for a winner. This year, the court was made up of one ASA, one local sorority girl and 2 from DKE. The winners were from the International Students Association and the Women's Rugby Team. The girl from the Rugby Team was dressed up in her Rugby outfit, which we thought was b/c they had a game. Later on, we realized that the whole rugby team was there in regular clothes, and that the girl wore her outfit for the team. She looked silly, but I guess it doesn't matter when you're wearing your rugby outfit and the tiara :)
