last point and general reference info

There is always another viewpoint to a story. HOWEVER, Vince is an OMEGA now, so what is the big deal? It does not make a difference whether he did it Undergrad or Grad.

For future reference... In our org, just being IN the org is not the end all. There's nothing worse than being an outcast in your own family. That might sound a little drastic and colorful, but there are a lot of strangers among the friends of Omega.

We have a doctrine titled "Members Vs Men"... all Omegas know that just being a 'member' is worse than if you never entered the gates of Omega at all...

Questions: (the preference thing)

Sooooooo, why do you all extend membership on the graduate level? Why not have graduate chapters for everyone (UGs) to transfer after they have completed school or whatever?

If a school does not have a UG chapter, then is that the only time when it is okay to seek membership on the graduate level?

When you said "our fraternity", does that mean that your national leaders agree and ultimately support this preference?

Grad Membership

All Grad Chapters in Omega do NOT extend membership in the form of having membership intake.

When most Grad Chapters (including my own, Alpha Phi, Birmingham Grad) have intake, the candidates are selected from guys to mail letters of interest to the chapter mailbox.

We have an intake about every 4 years at the Grad Chapter of my affiliation. Membership is offered only to those who didn't have the opportunity to enter the gates of Omega via the undergrad route :

1.) the chapter at your campus was suspended during all your non-freshman years.

2) Your campus didn't have an Omega Chapter.

Man isn't perfect and these guidelines aren't foolproof. Some have slipped through the cracks... But, that's the normal statutes most Grad Candidates must pass to get the opportunity. Also, usually, a Grad Candidate (at our chapter) is ineligible until he's been a graduate for 4 calendar years. And Grad candidates, since they are much more experienced in life than 19-22 year old undergrads, have to demonstrate their accomplishments and deeds (service) to a high degree to get "the vote".

oh...okay! I guess. So you're basically speaking from your chapter's way of doing things and not necessarily that of Omega Psi Phi, Inc?

You don't have to answer. Really, you don't.

as far as our National Officers... They don't have an official stance on UG or Grad intake... It's just part of the 'culture' of the Fraternity.

To make it clearer: Nationally, we have nothing written anywhere that speaks on Gold Boots, feeding and taking care of visiting Brothers needs, our style of marching (stepping for the rest of the D9, etc... Those things are a part of our Fraternity's culture.

omega's business

I guess basically what it boils down to is...let the brothers handle Vince the way the see fit. Whether anyone agrees with their stance or not, many brothers do feel this way. Although I personally think it is more about what you do when you're in the organization, rather than how you get in, I am a Delta, not an Omega. Any man who researches Omega before attempting to join, or even talks to the brothers will get a sense of how they feel about going grad vs. undergrad.

My uncle pledged Omega graduate chapter. He did it because he was 38 when he graduated from college and did not want to go the undergrad route at that age.

At the Boule, who would know if you crossed G or UG?

So, I know that this is an OLD thread, but does this issue extend to all men that pledge graduate or just Vince Carter?

I ask because it seems that no one has mentioned having a problem with Shaquille (sp?) O'Neal and I believe that he pledged graduate as well.

Senusret I 04-16-2009 01:51 PM

I dunno, but Tom Joyner still sucks.

Never cared for TOM Joyner and his TIRED A$$ show, but now I can honestly and truly say that he is the one that needs to get a "GRIP".

Wow, I know this is an old thread...and it's been over seven years since we came into Omega, but as the Ace of that line...I will say that SOME of us went through a process, but all of us were read in together.

The one thing I love about my Fraternity is that no matter how you may come in...time will tell where your heart is. In my humble opinion, Omega Psi Phi is the most challenging organization to be a part of b/c the true initiation begins once you enter the fold...and the weak will not tarry.

I hope that we as Colored folk start focusing on the things that really matter...and not whether or not someone actually pledged a damn fraternity!!

I'm not coming to anyone's defense, but I would like to challenge how we as Blacks place our priorities on what is truly important.

We are losing Black men by the minute (to the streets, prisons...dropping out of the educational system). Black men are constantly being emasculated by society as well as within their own race. We have started to attach their identity to foolishness...and it is almost expected for them to perpetuate the stereotypes...however, there are so many other intrinsic things that define a Black man.

Bro. Joyner's comments were juvenile and lacked caution and discernment...hence the reason why Omega's business is constantly on discussion boards...or in gossip sessions.

I recognize Vince and Shaq as Omega Men...and if there are any questions or concerns, perhaps one should sit down and speak with them...man-to-man.

Anyway, have a Merry Christmas Everyone...

Translation:

Vince didn't have a process like some of us did. But, ignore that information that I volunteered for the general public in an old thread. How you came in doesn't matter although I prefaced my post with how I came in versus how Vince came in. But, it doesn't matter. I promise. We're all bonded despite the fact that years later I still preface my discussion of my "LB" with the "SOME of us pledged" disclaimer. Tom Joyner's comments were juvenile and lacked caution and discernment but mine certainly don't. I didn't help to put Omega business on discussion boards and gossip sessions. This old and dormant thread really needed me to speak on something that no one cares about. I rep for mineS, homie.
