Dues in my chapter were $45 per month, not including summer months of June-August. This didn't include event t-shirts or pictures or any DZ paraphernalia that we purchased on the side.

While pledging, dues were more expensive because they had to cover the cost of our pledge pin, initiation fees, and badge. However, after initiation the cost dropped to the $45 rate. Very inexpensive compared to some schools because we were a relatively small chapter (55 total) and didn't have an official house to pay for.

Ballpark figures are sooo hard to throw out!

Each individual fraternity has its own set of expenses. If they have any of the following things, dues will increase =)

Parties
A home
Required residence at fraternity house (for the period that you are a resident)
Meal Plans
National Dues
Insurance

and many more. My chapter has several seperate fees and the amount of dues actually fluctuates with the financial burdens of the chapter. I know that dues of Sigma Nu chapters in my state range anywhere from $60 to $600 per month.

(to be fair, for the $600 you get a place to live and a meal plan =) )

It depends on the nature of Greek houses...If you look at places like Nebraska (take a virtual tour of my house) or places like University of Kansas...and places in the South as well, anywhere there is a true greek row you will find that the houses are huge (my house has 23 bedrooms...holding anywhere from 2 to 4 guys apiece...capacity is 63 people plus Housemother). I understand what you are referring to though, by having a normal house that happens to be rented by a GLO.

In my case, it is cheaper to live in the chapter house compared to living in the dorms. Only in my pledgeship year does it cost more money to live in the house, and that's only by 90 dollars. Next year paying only $4000 to live in will be about 400 dollars cheaper, and they are even thinking about raising the costs of a University Housing contract. Considering that the $4000 dollars pays for my utilities, food, social, intramurals, rent, dues, and anything else that the house may provide for, I think it's a pretty good deal. Throw in the fact that $200 of that total is a damage deposit that gets refunded (assuming I didn't break anythign) and overall I come out pretty far ahead.

As for dues, I have no idea what my dues to the General Fraternity are. I just pay my housing bill at the beginning of the semester and I'm set for that semester. We do have a payment plan set up, and our treasurers are also willing to set something up if that's necessary.
