U of M
UofM is Michigan
Not Minnesota, Miami, Mexico, Memphis or Montana. Occassionally, being lazy one may write UM. ABC and ESPN do. I sometimes, forget that we have other campuses. One time I was reading a thread by AOX81, about her sorority at the University of Michigan. I thought, "I have never heard of that sorority at UofM" Til she mentioned in another post that she went to UofM-Flint ;) So now I am trying to get into the habit of writing UofM-Ann Arbor. |
Usually there's not TOO much confusion with the "I" schools -- UI is Iowa, U of I is Illinois, and IU is Indiana. However, when *I* say U of I, I mean Iowa, because that's the one that really matters. Heh.

It's IU, not U of I
Another common problem is Indiana University and the non-existent University of Indiana.
A few years ago the alumni assn. offered pre-printed postcards, which we could send to publications and writers who got this confused. One of the grossest bits of confusion was during the unpleasant depledging (or maybe de-activation) of Bobby Knight . Sports Illustrated sent a writer to Indiana Univ., and his breathless report on the situation started "Here at the University of Indiana ...." |

I grew up in Columbus, Ohio -- figuratively speaking in the "shadow" of Ohio State. People there naturally assume that OSU=Ohio State. It's often what you grow up with. I see it run rampant in GC -- and it's perfectly understandable. I simply want to point out that it is a potential breakdown in communications, especially when it is written communication. |

Generally, from a style book perspective, I should use "University of Southern California" on first reference, USC on subsequent references. |
How about the USC's, who have very similar colors (S. Carolina's Garnet and Black, S. California is Garnet and Gold). Also, to Leeza Gibbons (any tri-delts out there can help me with the spelling!) USC may be her home college (S. Carolina) yet she lives in California! Anyway, I always say USC as my home college, but specify when I'm talking about the other USC... I figure people can figure out from my name which one I'm talking about.
|
Sorry, y'all, I didn't realize that there were already posts made about the two USC's... I'll have to agree with the AKA, MOST people think of USC as Southern California, but if you're part of the SEC, or the South, then you're gonna know that USC is the Gamecocks, Lou Holtz, Garnet and Black, whatever... I love my state, but I gotta admit, we're not among the top ranking in the popularity contest among states!;)

@CarolinaDG
I learned about the SEC's USC when I lived in the South. As a side note, Lou Holtz has done a nice job w/your football team.

Huge spread today in the Atlanta newspaper (accessatlanta.com) about widespread and continuing cheating in football in Southeast Conf.

In the Oklahoma City metro area there are two major schools which are often confused..
Oklahom City University (OCU) and mine the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) Most people don't even know that the two are different schools... |

33,
Isn't there an Indiana University of Pennsylvania? Somewhere close to Latrobe? |
