I can see why someone who isn't white might be uncomfortable joining a group that only opened up its membership rolls to non-whites 50 years ago. I can see why someone who isn't black may not want to join an NPHC group with their emphasis on service to the African American community. And in a day and age where the races can still be pretty Balkanized, I can see why a MCGLO would appeal to a lot of people, especially the growing population of people with multi-racial heritages. I can tell you, being white and joining a house that was (then) all-white, I felt pretty uncomfortable that I didn't have any Asian, Indian, or black sisters (those being the predominate minority groups on my campus). I don't believe for a moment that any of my sisters were racist, but I can see how, say, a Korean-American would have felt more comfortable joining one of the other houses that did have Asian sisters. And when we did get our first non-white sister, it was like the floodgates opened up - non-white rushees obviously felt more comfortable with our house and we did become more diverse. |
I have to agree with FuzzieAlum. While not racist, it is a little awkward to pledge an organization that "appears" to be ALL one race or another. I personally, while I've grown up around ALL kinds of people, would feel...uncomfortable pledging a sorority that was all white or Latin or Asian. But, if the group were mixed, I'd feel more comfortable pledging. But we all have to remember that any GLO has the right to choose their goals and focus, and we have to respect that right to choose if you want them to respect your org. And don't take someone else's opinion seriously, because unless we travel ALL over the country and join every org, ALL of us have a very narrow vision of how EVERY org operates.

While many Groups are pictured as White, Black, Asian, and Hispanic, this does not mean that it is !
I have Brothers from all walks of life as do many others! GLO BGLO, ask a few AGD, ask me LXA. Ask many other GLO and BGLO and they will tell you the same thing. The reason People join differnent Organizations is symply becase they did not see what they felt at ease with! I am sure Brother Jenkins and Ochani would disagree with you just to name two!:) The only reason you know the Ethniticy on this site is if they tell you or if you know the organization, and that does not always prove true. One thing at least you ask a question and try to become informed!:) |

2) The girl was just making a point. You don't have to be all rude and say "I wasn't talking to you". 3) When did a ethnic GLO get mad for not coining themselves "multicultural"? 4) I HAVE MET PEOPLE in MCGLOs. The guys in GPhiE are actually pretty cool guys. I just think (on our campus anyway) that any type of Ethnic GLO defeats the purpose of us calling ourselves "social" We shouldn't have to limit ourselves to one ethnicity, we need to be social with everyone. Just because most of the IFC and Panhellenic happen to be white means that they're racist. When I rushed an Asian frat, they told me every day that IFC was a bunch of racist people would would "never accept us". Low and behold, I depledge them and join a real IFC fraternity. Wow, how surprised I was to see other races in the frat, and in other frats in IFC as well. Seriously, if you're going to add a tag to your org, don't expect to get the same treatment that the real greeks get. |
