Re: A sisterfriend's perspective.............

I watched the show and my first impression was I can't believe that this sorority had no formal rules for selecting potential members. I didn't see anyone complete an application or no interviews. It seemed like the potentials went to the pledge house, signed in at the table and from 2 meetings the sorority members did a blind ballot for selecting members.

After reading the sorority thread in the general forum, I learned that this Jewish sorority is a local and they don't have the formal rules that the NPC has. Also, MTV either brought or rented out the "pledge house". It's not the norm for select pledges to move in a "pledge house". I was thinking initially, why did the pledge house look like a typical RW house except not as extravangent.

IMHO, it seemed most of the girls were not Jewish. If this is a Jewish sorority, why would they select many potential members who are not jewish and do not know anything about the Jewish faith? I would think their main emphasis of the sorority is Judism and sisterhood.

Was one of the selected girls Black? I missed it when she stated her ethnicity.

She said she was Mexican-American. I'm sure they do have things like applications and so forth, but MTV just didn't show it. After all who wants to watch someone fill out a packet? ;)

Local or not, I still think it is an interesting show in regards to how other people do things in regards to sorority life. I've read some other things about how this show will be a negative influence on greek life, but as usual, some people must look at their own behavior on their campus first. I can recall watching MTV Spring Break and seeing folks posing for the cameras with their letter plastered across their chest with a beer in their hand. Or on campus seeing members with their 'nalia own participating in "unmanly" or "unlady" like behavior.

I guess I'm looking at like this. I am an African American woman. There are DAILY demeaning and degrading images of African-American females shown through-out the media everyday( some being perpetrated by a channel that was SUPOSED to be about uplifting our people) that unfortunately some people come to believe to be true. To expect every media outlet to stop showing these images is unreasonable, so instead, I try to be a positive example in my everyday life.

This show is really a trip to me.

Miss Jordan needs to soak her little tail in some ice water...'cause she was droppin' it like it was HOT on the dance floor in front of the "big sisters" at a pledge event. I completely understand some of the sisters who have issues with her and some of the other girls. They don't want to follow any rules. Like I said before, they need a "session".

Now, they finally took these girls out to do a fairly good pledging exercise...they went out in the middle of God knows where and had to work together to move huge rocks into the shape of the orgs greek letters. The big sisters said that this was a "tradition" in their pledging activities. The pledges didn't "get it". The "big sisters" should have made them walk home!

Hey! I watched it last night too and I couldn't understand why some of the pledges were complaining about moving the rocks.

And Jordan.....let's just say that I think she will be given the boot from the pledge period.

Sorry to jump in on your thread, but to answer a question - you all are right, the NPC sororities do not do things the way this group on the show does. Our selection process and rush are different. And we don't have pledge houses, and we don't even call them pledges. But, no, we do not do individual interviews or applications.

Another sisterfriend's perspective

I think that some of the pledges need a reality check. Miss Jordan - I don't know what her problem is. Saying that the house is hers???? Get real! It's not your house!!!!!! She is just a mere visitor there! The pledges not understanding or faking to understand the significance of rearraning the rocks into the letters of the sorority - how pitiful these women are. There is obviously no unity within the pledge group - sitting up there wondering who the sixth person moving is was gonna be and not even really embracing the girl when she finally moved in. WTF???? I don't see Jordan being a part of this process much longer either.

Ok, this show has actually sparked a question from me....

The whole NPC vs. local issue aside, you guys do not do individual interviews or applications? Now that, I did not know!:o

There is a blanket application that women fill out at the beginning of formal rush, that has class standing, major, things like that. It also has a space to designate if you're a legacy to any group. This goes to all the NPC sororities.

We do not do one-on-one interviews as such before someone is given a bid. It sounds like a good idea though, but probably not feasible at schools w/ hundreds of rushees.

I was really surprised that they didn't have the "House Rules" all set before they moved in and even discussed during the informal events. It still isn't clear to me if the 5/6 girls in the pledge house were picked or chose to be there - I can't understand why such a small group is segregated from a 20/30 member pledge class?? I also found it interesting when they said they have never denied anyone a bid in the past, they just accepted everyone who attended their 3/4 rush events!! The rock thing surprisedme too, but I'll reserve my comments on it - I know that they are not an NPC sorority at the national level, but their website indicates that they have associate-status at UCDavis in the NPC, not sure what that means, they may not have to abide by NPC rules, but they don't seem to have any rules about anything and no advisors either unless they are just off camera. Then again, I think some of the charter members are still on campus so they may not have an alumni pool to draw from. Does anyone watch BugJuice on Zoog (a summer camp realityi show) ?? That's what it reminds me of.

I will say I thought the personal bid delivery with a flower was a nice touch.

This sounds right to me. I was wondering why they had a pledge house that only accomodates 6 people. How is that supposed to promote unity when they seperate 6 people from the rest of the pledges. I also figured that MTV picked the 6 people to stay in the house. It's might funny that 2 of the girls picked to stay in the house were girls that they thought were there for the wrong reason. I think that MTV picked them because of that reason and also they knew that their personalities would make an interesting show.

Serenity 07-04-2002 08:08 AM

In one of the threads in Greek Life about this show, someone (I think the person attends UC Davis) posted that MTV didn't pick and chose the girls to live in the house. In fact, they couldn't get a total of six girls to do it at first (camera shy, I guess). That's why Jessica came in after move in day.

I don't have a problem with the rock thing at all. My problem comes in with the pledges. Some of them have the worst attitudes ever. They don't want to work for SAEpi at all. They are content to just party, drink, bitch and moan about the rules and then expect to wear letters at the end of the quarter.

A lot of this could have been avoided if during rush the sisters of SAEPi spent some time explaining that those given/accepting bids would have to abide by strict guidelines because they would be representing SAEPi even as pledges. Especially since there was some doubt as to the motives of a few of the rushees. I think that would have been a good way to weed some of them out as opposed to letting the process weed them out. They wouldn't have even needed to go into specifics. Just stating in general but uncertain terms that pledges of SAEPi are expected to avoid any behaviors that would reflect negatively on SAEPi would have sufficed. Then for those living in the pledge house, the morning/afternoon (any time before they had a chance to break rules) of move-in day, the sisters should have gone over all the rules/guidelines in full detail.

They had already been drinking in the house and had visitors before the rules had been established.

Oh could you see these chicks trying to pledge a D9 sorority?
I see they have a slight problem with authority......
MIP or old school, they still wouldnt make it!!!

MTV Show

I just watched last Monday's show and I am appalled!! Jessica went out and got a bit tipsy and when one of her friends called her fellow pledges to come and get her, they straight lied like they didn't have a way to come and pick her up and the big sisters gave had to give her a ride home. The other 5 treat Jessica so badly!! These hot heffas would not last a day pledging a D9 sorority. Someone needs to set these little hot mamas straight! That is not sisterhood!

dzsaigirl 07-14-2002 05:29 PM

Just to step into your forum...

Those girls would not only "not last a day" pledging a D9 group, but they would not be allowed to be in an NPC group either! Please know that!

On another note, I think it is disgusting how they focus on Jordan and Candace just because they have the more "MTV" look. I think the only person in that house who I feel I would be friends with is Jessica, and they are treating her like a leper!

hey ladies...

i've been watch this MTV "sorority life" with a couple of friends and although none of my friends are greek...all they can say is that there is no kind of sisterhood with these chics. the situation with the rocks was ridiculous because they didn't even try to figure out what was it about and they way they welcomed jessica...calling her a spy.

needless to say this show is interesting and the way MTV portrays these pledges are drunks....whoa

i am interested in seeing how the other sides works...

all i now i my big sisters were NO where near as lienient as these sisters are...
