When we go to parties, a lot of times we'll just wear jeans and a cute shirt, or black pants. Rarely ever do my girls wear skimpy clothing...well there are a few who do. Usually it's the GDI's who wear hoe-bag clothing. It's kinda funny cuz I'll be sittin around by the door with some of the sisters from other chapters and we just crack up at what people dress in. The only time people ever really dress up is for the Bid Parties or New Year's Eve which was strictly a Greek event. (our Greek system is very close).

At my "burg" (in the mountains of MD) you only dressed up if it was a crush party or formal. Otherwise it was jeans and shirts, most likely sweatshirts. It was freakin freezing there most of the time. The one thing we rarely wanted to wear though were coats. You didn't want your coat (the most important item at school) to get beer spilled on it or cig. burns because you needed it for the next day for classes. LOL. We always froze our tushies off running to parties but it was better than trying to find a safe place to stash it while you were there.
We also NEVER brought purses. I don't think I used mine once at school. For classed you stuffed your ID and keys in your backpack, and for parties you took the one key you needed off the ring, put your ID in your back pocket with your money and if you could throw in your lipstick somewhere, that was great. Back in the early 90's cell phones weren't carried around or owned for that matter..they were practically as big as a purse. :) As for dressing for parties these days, it doesn't matter where you go to school, or what kind of body you have or how sexy you want to feel...MORE is less...leave something for the imagination. Sheez ;) |
I'm with Imadeltaz. We just wore jeans and nicer tops to parties. And no one carried purses - your keys and lipstick fit in your pockets. No one was doing the cell phone thing yet. (Why do you need one even now? I mean, you have a dorm room phone, and you can't answer it during class, and you can't hear to talk at a party!) You didn't even carry a purse to class.

At my school, people dress up for parties---for the girls, I'll call "dressing up" Black pants, a tank/halter top, or sandals/boots. Also, a little purse, because most black pants don't have pockets! I never thought it was a problem, but maybe it's because I don't really socialize within the Greek world. Oh well.

33, maybe it's a state school thing :) To go out, it's jeans or shorts, maybe even a denim skirt or khaki skirt, and what we called "bar shirts", which are basically little cute tops, even a little belly if you've got a navel ring.
As for the purse, NO WAY!! The bars or parties are so crowded, that there's nowhere to carry a purse. Of course, in 1996, we didn't go out with our cell phones or anything. Pack of cigarettes, lighter, money, key and gum. Some people would put the keys and gum and lighter in their bras, and cigarettes and money in their pockets!! :) |
I guess times have changed :) At my school, it was jeans or khakis (or sometimes, slightly nicer slacks), and a nice top - a tank top was about the skimpiest you'd see. Few people carried purses - keys, ID, and cash went in your pants pockets, and people tended not to carry their cell phones.

I have to agree on carrying a purse... most of the girls at my school DID carry purses, whether it be to classes or out to the bars/parties. I think I used my backpack once or twice a year, if I had a lot of books to carry for some reason.. otherwise just grab a notebook and your purse and your ready to go.
For parties/bars/whatever, most girls (myself included) carry a small purse for id/money/cell phone/whatever. Party dress at Whitewater was usually a skirt and tanktop or halter, otherwise black pants... and neither of those have pockets, so there's really nowhere to carry money/id. I can't imagine wearing a sweatshirt and jeans to a party  I don't think you'd be let in at most of the parties we held in that kind of attire! We pretty much stuck to club rules.. no jeans, no sneakers, etc. |
Ginger, maybe your school's parties were in nicer houses or such, but to have club rules to gain entrance to a party? Hell, our fraternities couldn't care less what you wear as long as you paid your cash to get in!

Hell, if I had to primp myself up that much (no jeans!) to just go to some party, I'd just stay home.

man, i've seen girls in see-thru dresses, showing off their assets. crazy short skirts/shorts. low cut tops, backless. depending on where you're at, the stuff in that show isn't all that racy. it's pretty tame if you ask me.

Im with Ginger. Everyone dresses up, even for bars. Black pants (sorority pants) are the norm. Capris in the warmer weather. Purses and Peacoats. Jeans sometimes at bars or in fraternity houses, but really never at mixers or bar parties.

I don't know if it was because I went to college in Arizona where it can still feel like 112 degrees at 10pm, but we always dressed skimpy and sexy for parties/bars/clubs. Even the guys dressed up for parties. I had a billion pairs of black pants, strappy heels, and shiny tank tops. I think it made it fun, getting all dressed up to go out. But I do think it varies from school to school because I went to a fraternity party in my hometown and I was way overdressed. Everyone at the party was in jeans, sweatshirts, t-shirts.
As for the purse...I managed for quite a while to somehow fit my key, id, cash, lipstick, etc in my bra when I went out....Then I started carrying a cell phone and had to get some little 'going out bags'. :D |
Right on Colleen!! It all depends on what part of the country you are in, and if you live in the desert then you wear less clothing.
