I have my doubts
The Greek community may be growing at Harvard, but it's going to stay underground.
The primary reason Harvard won't recognize GLOs (according to Harvard) is that they are single-sex, which violates the university's anti-discrimination policy. Dartmouth notwithstanding, GLOs aren't going co-ed any time soon, and I strongly doubt that Harvard is going to change its anti-discrimination policy. Clubs that have been a part of Harvard for over 100 years are unrecognized because of the policy; they're certainly not going to treat a brand-new AEPi colony any better. The university is dead serious about nonrecognition. GLO posters are forbidden. The Sigma Chis were prevented from helping freshmen move in. The rules are enforced. Recognized Greek HOUSING is flat-out never going to happen at Harvard. The university is extremely invested in its randomized housing system, and there is no single-sex or special-interest housing of any kind except for a co-op. The college was dancing for joy when Sigma Chi lost their house. Researchers in some arm of the university may have released a pro-Greek study, but as for the college welcoming GLOs, well, don't hold your breath. Ivy |

I tried to write a book on brain surgery once but then I realized I had no idea what I was talking about. There is no brand new AEPi colony at Harvard. The chapter was established in 2001 meaning the colony was around for a few years before that. And in term of recruitment, I know they were doing just fine about a year ago regardless of not being officially recognized. -Rudey |
Y'know, I really wish everyone would get off the backs of places like Harvard. I understand why they banned Greek Life- if I were an administrator here, I'd be digging for ways to kill off GLOs. Greeks are NOT assets everywhere- most especially not in New England. At UMass, they have poor grades (the average student has a 2.9, the average Greek a 2.6), cost the town thousands in law enforcement costs, and completely terrorize their neighbors. I will be the first one to admit that we have a terrible Greek system, and it probably should be swept away.
That said, I've been working for two years to help improve it, and it's getting better little by little, but still....if Northeastern Greeks were the only variety I'd ever seen, I'd want them banned everywhere, instantly. |

At BU, we're getting better, definitely recovering from the "dark ages" about a decade ago. It's been hard work - keep at it man, you're fighting the good fight. |
Northeastern? No, I don't think! Schools that lose in football to UMass don't register on my radar.

Theta
Theta is at Harvard and the girls are great! They may not be recognized by Harvard, but they do very well and are a great Chapter. I think the only bonus of being recognized is having Rush on Campus, otherwise, it's great! You don't have to deal with campus trying to crush you, or reviewing what you do.
Go Harvard Greeks! |
Theta Chi does not recognise chapters where the school doesn't. Part of making the campous better. I think it should be case by case decision but oh well whatever.

how do they have rush if they aren't recognized and can't show flyers or what not?

>how do they have rush if they aren't recognized and can't show flyers or what not?
Word of mouth, mainly. People invite their friends to come rush. This is the same way that the old gentlemen's clubs work...it's all networking. Ivy |
