a. Denzel won this year IMHO because he lost for The Hurricane, just like last year Russell Crowe won for Gladiator because he lost for The Insider the year before.
b. Why are people hating on Monster's Ball? I would be willing to bet MONEY that none of them have evn seen it and are going on ASSumptions. Halle was amazing and the movie was amazing point black. c. I cried during Halle's speech, I did. d. Why did J-Lo look like a contestant in a Texas beauty pageant? |

I'm very pleased about Halle and Denzel. My 74-year-old mother said she couldn't believe that she saw this in her lifetime. :) |

Friends of the Oscars
from Flo Anthony's website:
On Saturday, March 23, in the LeGrand Trianon Room of the Regent Beverly Wilshore Hotel, in Beverly Hills, California, some of the biggest African-American names in the film industry, will be on hand to accept the "Tree of Life Award," presented by "The Friends of Black Oscar Nominees." Since 1981, "The Friends of Black Oscar Nominees," which include Academy Award winninng actor Sidney Poitier, music legend Quincy Jones, poet Maya Angelou, casting agent Reuben Cannon, entrepreneur Albert Nellum, and actress Cicely Tyson, have gathered on the eve of the Annual Academy Award ceremony, to recognize members of the African-American community nominated for the Oscar. Over the years, the 'Friends" expanded the honorees to include other African-American actors, actresses, writers, directors and producers, who excelled in film during the year. 2002 "Tree of Life" recipients include Oscar Nominee Halle Berry, Best Performance, Leading Actress; Will Smith, Best Performance Leading Actor; and Denzel Washington, Best Performance, Leading Actor. The "Tree of Life" statue given to each honoree, is an ancient African symbol of family which expresses togetherness, unity and the struggle for survival. |

now to answer my question;) MORGAN FREEMAN -- SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION (Did Tim Robbins get one either? I love this movie) MICHAEL CLARKE DUNCAN for THE GREEN MILE!! I cry every time I see this movie. Didn't Tom Hanks win for the movie -- well give the brotha his props because he had me crying. DENZEL WASHINGTON in REMEMBER THE TITANS. I still have not seen the HURRICANE but I will trust yall THIS TIME. ANGELA BASSETT & LAURENCE FISHBURNE in What's Love Got To Do With It? OPRAH WINFREY and DANNY GLOVER for THE COLOR PURPLE HALLE BERRY in LOSING ISAIAH, Dorothy Dandridge, and (I AM DRAWING A BLANK ON MY 3RD ONE -- BRB to edit) **this is all I can think of for now but it's enough. |
Oh there are numerous actors and actress that have deserved this honor in the past! I can't begin to name them all! And I won't repeat the ones you all have mentioned. (But I do LOVE me some Denezel, I still need to see Training Day though!)
However, I must put in a plug for SGRho.....:D Soror Hattie McDaniel was the first Black women to win Best Supporting Actress for her role in "Gone with the Wind." PS: J-Low's outfit was a big discussion at my job on Monday! I need to hear the comments on E! My friend said there was a joke that the after party was held in her hair...LOL... :D |
From E Online
More Emotion
She wasn't crying any longer, but Best Actress Halle Berry (Monster's Ball) was definitely still breathing deep and gathering herself when she made it backstage. "It's a great night. I never thought it would be possible," Berry said of her historic win--the first ever for a black actress in a lead role. "I am filled with so much pride and joy and gratitude." Also filled with pride and joy was hubby Eric Benét who stood just off to the side of the podium, stargazing--at his wife. Best Actor Denzel Washington (Training Day) was a much more cool customer, even though his win also was historic--he's the first black actor to win two career Oscars and the first black actor to win for a leading role since 1963. He said his prior experience at the Academy Awards (a Best Supporting win for 1990's Glory) helped keep him "very calm" and watching the NCAA basketball tournament until just before his limo arrived. In other words, he was the opposite of Halle. "She doesn't know where she is--she's gone," he said with a laugh. For the record, reporters made more of the black-actor-wins-an-Oscar angle than Washington. He invoked the name of tunesmith Randy Newman more than once (as when he asked whether Newman lost 16 times in a row before winning tonight, was that racism?) and helped a newspaper reporter with the wording on his lede: "Say an actor won." http://ak1.aka.eonline.com/7/1480/12...washington.jpg |
Denzel is just a cool brotha! It also probably helped that he has won for Best Supporting Actor in "Glory."

Long time koming

I guess Samuel is not mainstream enough to get one. I was rather shocked that Denzel got it. I thought Will Smith was going to get it, even though Denzel acted the best. It's a shame that the Academy gave him an award for portraying a THUG, RENEGADE, and CROOKED cop, but he kouldn't get one for MALCOLM X. Maybe that's what Denzel meant by two birds in one night. Black actors probably won't get another OSCAR for 30+ years. Don Cheatle deserved an award for ROSEWOOD and DEVIL AND A BLUE DRESS. ED NORTON deserved an award for AMERICAN HISTORY X. Matt Damon deserved an award for GOOD WILL HUNTING. DeNiro definitely deserves one for RAGING BULL, HEAT, DEER HUNTER, GOODFELLAS, etc...! |

It's sad that an actor/actress must go "mainstream" in order to get the recongition they desire! :( Hence the reason we have our own awards! That's sad. Because the major of Black America support white film makers, yet we get over looked. Now that will be the next trumiph.... when a Black Film gets an Oscar... sadly enough it'll probably take another 74 years! :( |
