Katey Alpha Gam 03-09-2002 05:44 PM

If you guys remember the Fritos lunch kit commmercials that were out last summer with Jeff Gordon and his wife, she is picking red and buff roses from the garden, that's b/c one of the ppl who created that commercial was an Alpha Gam, so it's totally possible she is the same one who is making the Geico and other squirrel commercials! When I become a famous campaign manager, I'll make sure that there are hidden things in my commercials and at big events, I'll make sure there are ONLY red and buff roses :)

A great representation for APO when....

Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle wears his APO pin whenever he is on TV.

cash78mere 03-09-2002 08:52 PM

that is horrible!

I don't know how you ladies can think that that is a good thing or something to be proud of! That makes me sick thinking that someone put secrets (even though the majority doesn't know it) in a movie. :( I would be FURIOUS if i ever found any AXO secrets just lying about.

I know that when I initiated into Alpha Chi Omega, I made a pledge to NEVER reveal anything secret through SPOKEN, WRITTEN, JESTURATIVE (is that a word!!) or any other form outside of initiation. That includes movies (although I don't think i'll be producing any movies any time soon!) ;)

Symbols are something to be proud of, but secrets should NEVER be revealed.

The wife of one of the Anheiser-Busch guys was a Theta...there are pansies and our pledge pin on the Bud cans!! Also, Amy Grant wrote the song "I'm Gonna Fly" for her pledge class, so I'm told.

names/symbols

My boyfriend and I watched the film Double Take last night (which was not as funny, but also better, than I expected). There's a scene where the CIA is about to attack this hotel, and all of these 'delivery' trucks pull up. Some were real products, like Pepsi, but others were invented. One of them was "FIJI" brand bottled water. I don't know if someone involved in the movie is a FIJI or not, but I thought of that immediately!

cashmere... while I could be completely wrong, I imagine that by 'secrets' people possibly mean symbols. In all actuality there are some symbols of my fraternity (and I'm sure others) that are quite common as individual items, but hold special meaning to only members. In fact, one Phi Beta's symbols is the lyre. It's also one of AXO's, isn't it? I'm pretty sure that it has different meanings to both of us. And seeing it in a movie is probably not going to give away any secret meanings to the viewers. It's probably just a 'pride' kind of thing. Like if I made a point to put tons of American beauty and yellow roses everywhere in a movie I'm making. (the American beauty is our offical flower, and the yellow rose has been a traditional unofficial flower for years). It would just be kind of a 'shout out' to my GLO.

Now, if there are actual secrets hidden in movies, or secrets behind symbols being revealed, no matter how hard you have to pay attention, I have to agree with you that that is not appropriate.

FIJI water is for real! it came on the market (as far as i'm aware of) my junior year of college, 3 years ago. the FIJI's were obsessed with it, as were their girlfriends (one girl i know had BOTTLES of it laying around on display).

it tastes the same as any other water, but it is in a really cute bottle!

silverturtle-

i hope you're right! that's what i originally though until everyone started to use the word "secrets". symbols are not secrets. there is a huge difference. i do hope that's what they mean.

on a different note-
honestly, one of my biggest pet peeves is people spreading rumors about GLOs that are obviously not true. as new members, they hear stories from the older girls (or guys) and believe it as fact. come on, stop a minute and think. do we really think that there are badges on the moon (which has been discussed befoe on an old thread), etc?

sorry, had to vent!:D

PM_Mama00 03-10-2002 01:07 PM

Ok, so personally I think it'd be really cool if there were more Phi Mu secrets in movies. I would not take it offensively. I'd see it as "Where's Waldo", except you don't know that it's there. It's not like they are telling the secret in any way, it's just a way of, say, putting a signature in the movie without anyone else knowing, except for that certain organization. No one's secrets are being released.

Also, what you said about the rumors about GLOs, there are many threads in this chat about this, or you could start another thread. I'm just saying this so that this thread doesn't end up on a whole different topic.

PhiMuNursie 03-10-2002 01:11 PM

actually

Actually some of our symbols are secrets or have meanings behind them. I sorta figured that wasn't just Phi Mu, but other chapters have secret meanings behind some of their symbols.

Now, I agree that it's inappropriate to have secrets out in public for all to see/hear, but if they are secrets that only initiated members know then other people truly aren't going to pick up on it. I can't tell you how many times I watched tv with my boyfriend and never made a huge issue of the commercial with a secret in it, therefore he had no idea. I could watch the little mermaid 1000 times and still not have any insight into the chapter from which it refers. So I guess I'm on both sides of the fence regarding this.

How do other greeks feel, I know a few of us have vented here, but what about the rest of you?

Tara

i have a Phi Mu castle...

Does this mean Dr. Seuss's wife told him your secrets?

KillarneyRose 03-10-2002 03:04 PM

One of our sisters, Edith Head, was an Oscar winning clothing designer who did the costumes for hundreds of Hollywood movies. When I was a pledge, I was told that something she designed for an actress to wear in a movie was based on what we wear during our Ritual. Of course, if someone who isn't a Delta Zeta happens to see this movie and this costume, she isn't going to know that!

I agree with Silver Turtle; it's a nice shout out to one's sisters :)
