I don't know if I have already said this in this thread... I'm sure that I did say it in another. But people fear what they do not understand. Most of your journalists are looking to sell stories and it's easy to sell something that shows validity to people's stereotypes.
My house is about to begin to engage in some fairly aggressive PR -- doing news releases to local papers when we do community service and philanthropy, etc... If GLO's were a little bit more aware of their need for good PR I think we could start to gain a little bit more ground. LHT, Kevin |
Drinking can be classified as 'binge' if more than five drinks are consumed in an hour. To be fair most students aren't like . . . well I think I'll have a glass of sherry with dinner. They drink to get drunk. I have a friend who always says "its about quantity not quality". So sure he will easily consume five or more drinks in an hour but in most cases we are talking about alcoholic beverages that are not all that strong.

Speaking of Binge Drinking
Ok- first- I could have written almost the same thing as 33girl! She is right on the money. And yes, SAEActive, greeks do need to stand up and take responsibilty for these things (even if the kid that was drunk at the frat party is a GDI & had 8 beers before he showed up at your house  )

So, if when I was in college I had 2-3 drinks every day, I wouldn't be a binge drinker. But if I went out two weekends a month and drank around 4-5 drinks on both occassions, I would be a binge drinker. Now, which scenario makes you think I need to get to a 12-step program pronto? I know the drinking habits of friends and myself in college. We occassionally went out drinking. Usually on the weekend... when we didn't have class the next day. I also know the drinking habits of my friends now (offical "adults" out of college) and they, too, occasssionally go out drinking, usually on the weekend when they don't have to work the next day. And they often drink more than 2 drinks on these nights. I'm not trying to say binge drinking, or excessive drinking in itself, are not problems. But I am getting a little annoyed at all of the articles stating binge drinking statistics. If that's the case, maybe we should all drink nightly so we, too, are not binge drinkers. I, too, am of the camp that Americans have the wrong approach to alchohol, and I've been that way since I was a teenager & visited Europe and saw that alcohol wasn't a big deal to kids there. They weren't out to get drunk, they just wanted a beer with dinner. Ok, just wanted to get that off my chest... drinking in America is a problem. Only because Americans make it a big deal to begin with. |
Hey everyone,
Just a couple points I wanted to add. One, there is no proof that the TKEs at SDSU had were drunk at all- at least not yet. The newspapers and media in San Diego have been totally going off on how the TKEs were expelled, and how fraternities are always binge drinking, etc. etc. I feel so bad for those TKEs...I've been to their house, they have a huge alter thing out front, you know they feel awful enough as it is. Why is it necessary for the media to make it sound like they should feel personally responsible for the deaths of their brothers? Just needed to vent, thanks. Corina |
