The intro makes me roll my eyes but I will watch the rest of the episode.

LOL @ the drumline theme music

Yeah they definitely aren't hiding their memberships: colors, hand signs, calls, stepping, naming the sororities, etc.

SISTERHOOD UNDER THE MICROSCOPE: RESPECTABILITY, SOCIAL MEDIA, AND VH1’S “SORORITY SISTERS”

als463 12-16-2014 02:35 PM

Most of the ladies on the show sounded as though they crossed at HBCUs. In the NPHC world, is it more or less respected to say you crossed at an HBCU? Is it considered harder to cross at an HBCU? I'm only asking for clarification in areas that members of the NPHC GLOs can share--I'm not asking for any secrets.

;) als463, you know this thread is not going to become an NPHC Q&A or tutorial.

I apologize if it came off that way. If there is anything that can be answered regarding the HBCUs, that would be great. If not, I respectfully understand as I would not want to be rude.

I have got to find time to watch this.

It's actually pretty entertaining. I was just surprised to see that there are certain stereotypes associated with the different GLOs.

It depends on who you ask.

It depends on the sorority/chapter and what you consider "hard." Not trying to be deliberately vague, there are just truly no blanket answers to those questions.

There's a campaign to boycott all companies that advertise during the show to make it so that airing SS causes VH1 to lose ad dollars. It's working - Carmex, Hallmark, and the maker of the Selma movie have all announced they are pulling their commercials from VH1 (at least during that time slot) to distance themselves from the show.

I DVRed it but haven't watched it yet. I was waiting to see if it was a show about sorority women or just trash based on stereotypes (like the last one, Sorority Girls). Sen's review makes it sound like it might be worthwhile so I think I'll call one of my reality-TV-loving-sisters over to watch it with me.

I don't think you are being vague at all. I really appreciate you answering that question as I did not want to step on anyone's toes or be disrespectful/ rude. I always wondered that because I have friends from both HBCU and non-HBCU chapters. I saw the campaign all over FB about it.

I mentioned to a friend of mine who is a Que that you would think people would be smart enough not to assume every member of XYZ acts a certain way. He laughed and said, "Yeah. You would hope people would be smart enough to realize that but, they aren't. That's why people are upset." There were a few ladies on there who didn't seem to really make a name for themselves in a bad way. I am interested to see how the rest of the season plays out or if they will even finish airing it due to the backlash.

My mom and aunts were spitting nails when they heard about this show! But my mom is a big fan of Mr. Darden's work so I'll have to show her his blog post. If she sees that a respected member of a HBGLO is willing to give it a chance, she might cave and I won't have to risk spending the rest of Christmas break living in my car by watching it ;)

How are the IHQs for each organization reacting to the show?

You can find a collective statement here: http://www.nphchq.org/nphc-statement...ority-sisters/

I just want to point out that while the show may be entertaining to some, most likely those women are not active Alumnae members and therefore not an accurate representation of sorority life after college. Sorority life after college for D9 sororities means being active in Alumnae chapters.

^^^There are allegations that one of them (Adrene) is actually a perp. No evidence either way that I've seen.
