We had a few extras at our daughter's wedding, but a buffet was served with lots of food that was unused (and was donated to a homeless shelter), so no guest went hungry.

That 90% rule seems to be reasonable. I find people only eat as much as you put out, and if your event is a weekend/holiday event, it is likely your guests may have eaten at a previous event and not that hungry, or at all hungry.

I'm gonna do that now - prepare just a little bit less than necessary. Liquor, however, we're gonna go with Y = X * 1.1 (bottles) LOL

As an aside: When folks bring liquor and it's still unopened by the night's end, do you give it back to the person who brought it or keep it?
