Alpha Xi Delta's first chapters were a bit all over the place.

Alpha - 1893, Illinois
Beta - 1902, Iowa
Gamma - 1902, Ohio

Zeta - 1904, Ohio
Eta - 1904, New York
Theta - 1905, Wisconsin
Iota - 1905, West Virginia
Kappa - 1905, Illinois
Lambda - 1907, Massachusetts
Mu - 1907, Minnesota
Nu - 1907, Washington
Xi - 1908, Kentucky
Omicron - 1909, California
Pi - 1911, Ohio

That makes sense - when I was looking through the chapter rolls yesterday I noticed that almost all of the single-letter chapters are at major flagship state universities. I'm still a fan of that strategy. I think more prominent schools are *generally* more immune to the ebbs and flows of college enrollment numbers.
