A couple of years ago, the daughter of someone I know had her named trashed on "that" Greek Life website that we don't mention here. That was intentional attempted sabotage, and while I don't think it represents the majority of PNMs at all, mean girls are out there. Give them an anonymous platform like that site, and they could feel like they have carte blanche to be as verbally vicious as they want to.
Some PNMs are just misinformed, like those who think sororities will find recs for them. They can easily get this idea from their school's own Panhellenic website. Many do say the responsibility of recs is ultimately that of the sororities, but some PNMs don't realize sororities might not have time or be able to find recs for them, and that some schools use "no recs" as part of their process for managing the numbers in these huge recruitments. Also, If you Google "sorority rush" or "rush advice" or anything along those lines, all kinds of info pops up. PNMs and parents are pulling misinformation from a variety of sources, including "that" site.
Whether it's obvious or suspected sabotage, or just people being misinformed, bad info is getting out there. I think letting the school's Greek Life office or Panhellenic know is a good idea.
