The Weather Channel announced Tuesday that they planned to start naming winter storms, similar to how the National Weather Service names tropical systems. Why?

"-Naming a storm raises awareness.
-Attaching a name makes it much easier to follow a weather system’s progress.
-A storm with a name takes on a personality all its own, which adds to awareness.
-In today’s social media world, a name makes it much easier to reference in communication.
-A named storm is easier to remember and refer to in the future."

They are actually all mythical names.. gods, goddesses, etc.

Very funny article about it here:

This storm is also being referred to as Charlotte. Apparently another station (I forget which) has also taken it upon themselves to name winter storms. Of course, Nemo seems to be the more popular name.. for obvious reasons..

The roads here are a mess. There are lines around the block to get gasoline. But I've got bagels, fresh fruit, and most importantly, gin. I'm all set :)

sigmagirl2000 02-08-2013 03:49 PM

AEPhi alum, you went to WPI, right? are you still in this area?

aephi alum 02-08-2013 04:07 PM

Nope, MIT. Which is closed. MIT NEVER closes.

I live in Connecticut now, but I'm down on Long Island right now as my mother is in the hospital. Both CT and LI are getting slammed, but Boston is supposed to get REALLY slammed.

Stay safe, everyone.

I know. I just went out to my truck to get something I forgot and it is beautiful weather here in Dallas. I'll go running on the Katy Trail tonight.

And, definately, all GCers in the storm area, be safe!

I'm still "knocking on wood" though, because the meteorologist here will say one thing, and then the weather will change to something totally different.

I hate aggieAXO, right now. :p

I was smart enough to move to TX from NJ two months ago. It's 70 degrees and sunny here in Houston!

All my family and friends in NH, MA, RI, PA, NY, and NJ hate me right now :D

Stay warm (and safe), GCers! I know what it's like to deal with those New England storms!

honeychile 02-08-2013 07:37 PM

I think they got the name from We Don't NEMO snow!

DoctorD 02-08-2013 08:16 PM

I want to be on the storm naming committee.

sigmagirl2000 02-08-2013 08:18 PM

People keep asking on the news what "thunder snow is". This makes me think they are idiots, what does it sound like?

However, I just saw that we're projected for a few hours of 3-7" of snow an hour. WTF?! 7" an hour? that's insane. I always thought like 1-2" an hour was heavy snow.... *cranking heat in anticipation of power loss*

AGDee 02-08-2013 08:24 PM

That is the difference between a snow storm and a blizzard.. that, plus the wind. When you consider that a tenth of an inch of rain = one inch of snow (roughly), that's less than an inch of rain an hour. And you easily get that during a rainy nor'easter, right? I hope you don't lose power!

Add me to the "I hate you" list :p

I'm starting to think my in laws had the right idea when they moved to Florida!

Here in NYC, they're trying to make it "business as usual." My office technically closed early but we're all nerds who stayed to finish our reports (MAJOR deadline coming up soon).

I think that by the time we wake up in the morning, the snow will have stopped falling and it'll just be a regular Saturday.
