* I'l admit that the animation and sound in Charlie Brown aren't the best, which is not surprising given that they had almost no budget and some of the children voice-over actors couldn't read yet. But still, between the story, the writing and Vince Guaraldi's music, the technical "problems" just add to the charm for me. Trivia: The creators of the show, including Schultz, had lots of fights about the story, the inclusion of the passage from Luke, the music . . . . When CBS execs previewed it one week before it aired, they thought it was horrible and a sure flop. When it premiered, half of all American TVs were tuned to it, and to the surprise of CBS execs, it immediately became a critical and popular hit, winning an Emmy and a Peabody.** The Grinch was directed by Chuck Jones of Looney Tunes, and it shows in the animation. Couple that with Dr. Seuss's words -- and he wrote the extra script not in the book, including all the song lyrics -- and Boris Karloff's voice, and it just can't be beat. |

Where to start? I think mine have all been mentioned: Charlie Brown, The Grinch, It's A Wonderful World (a recent favorite), The Griswolds, and Love, Actually. There are several YouTube videos that I tend to watch year after year, too.

White Christmas is one of my favorite Christmas movies of all time.
|
My wife and I both love White Christmas; it just isn't the holiday season until we see it. I also love to hear Judy Garland sing "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" from Meet Me in St. Louis. The movie--just OK for me--the song, magic!
|
I think that for those of us of a certain age, an Andy Williams or Perry Como Christmas special would do it every time!

Scrooged.
Star Wars. (When I was a kid, no holiday was complete without a Star Wars marathon on Grandpa's tv. So now Star Wars always makes me think of Thanksgiving/Christmas). I never cared for Frosty. But I loved The Grinch and Charlie Brown. Rudolph... eh, I could go either way. Die Hard. Bad Santa. A Christmas Story. The Santa Clause. My kids favorites are The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Polar Express, and A Muppet Christmas Carol. |

"Elf".
But not just "Elf" - "Elf" Quote-a-long at Alamo Drafthouse! http://drafthouse.com/movies/elf_quote-along/houston "This year, Christmas comes early, and we're all going to spread that Christmas cheer the best way we know how - by singing and quoting loud for all to hear. And don't worry, if you can quote alone, then you can quote around other people. There's really no difference! Oh man, just writing out a paragraph with jarbled versions of Buddy's quotes from this movie is getting me all sorts of excited. Will Ferrell's take on a North Pole elf trying to figure out Manhattan just might be the funniest he's ever been, and this is certainly the best holiday movie from the past ten years. To celebrate, we'll have jingle bells for everyone, bubbles for a few key scenes, and a present for whoever can eat their spaghetti the fastest! "Buddy the elf, what's your favorite color?" That's how I'm answering my phone all through December. "(Henri Mazza) They have a spaghetti with maple syrup eating contest. I will not be participating. |
Babes in Toyland with Laurel and Hardy - the 1934 movie.
You can find some clips on YouTube; in fact you might even be able to watch the entire movie. It's so corny - I love it. |
The Year Without a Santa Claus
Elf The Grinch A Christmas Story As I'm typing this, my kids are watching the Christmas specials on Disney Junior. I wonder how they'll answer this question in about 20 years....:) |
