I will use WAL however and whenever I think it is warranted. You and agzg can just lose at life if you have a problem with that. :p

This is from the 'old' days: I "won" the Junior High School School Science Fair.

Judging was blind--no names on entries and no contestant by their entry as it is judged.

Each entry included a hand-written ledger stating what we did, how we did it, and what it meant to the scientific community. My ledger used PRINTED letters (not cursive), which in retrospect is used by teen males more often than teen females and may explain what happened next...

AFTER all contestants AND THEIR PARENTS had re-entered the display room AND seen the winner's plaque and certificate by my entry, the judges suddenly realized they had declared A GIRL their Science Contest Winner . I was the FIRST GIRL :D to win the school's Science Contest.

But the judges were having none of that! (remember this was the olden days)

They huddled together and decided the winning entry was really a display by two BOYS (who ironically won the Science Fair, with a different display, the previous year).

In the uproar that followed it was decided I should still get a prize, so at the school's award ceremony later in the year I was given a ten dollar bookstore certificate while the two boys each got a twenty-five dollar bookstore certificate.

Only their names went on the plaque as the winners :(.

My science teacher was upset, but it was his first year of teaching and he had no tenure and thus no say-so in re-instating me as THE winner. But I still have a fun story to tell :).

That is total bullshit. LAME!!!

Let's see...I won like 20 bucks in scratchers in my entire lifetime - none of which I purchased...so yay?

Beyond that...nothing I can think of. Hmm...

My husband won tickets on the radio to see Peter Murphy in concert. It was just kind of meh, but we had fun laughing at people who danced like Pee Wee Herman, so it was worth it.

I just remembered, I won $15 on a scratcher a few weeks ago. I've also won a couple drawings at work (one for $50 and one for beer glasses...I don't drink beer but they're nice for soda).

If we're talking about "more than luck" contests, then I've won 1st place in a national writing competition a few years ago ($75 and an offer to be published which I declined).

I've won lots of small lotto money prizes; I like scratchoffs. I won $50 during the most recent big lottery jackpot.

I won $1000 from Fuse, the music channel, when I was a freshman. That money all went to groceries and a sweet tattoo for my then-boyfriend. I should've gotten my own sweet tattoo!

Won a Dyson last year!

Cheerio's story reminded me - I won the Sallie Beretta Outstanding Senior Woman award for my undergraduate class.

I won a silver tray.

The Outstanding Senior Man got $1,000.

When there was a glitch getting gypsyboots her financial aid package for the summer I called the alumni office and offered to bring them my tray if they would give her $1,000.

They did come up with $700.

I am now only 7/10ths as upset as I was.

ChioLu 08-22-2012 08:26 AM

I've won 9 trips (so far):
Hawaii (USA Today)
Bahamas cruise on Royal Caribbean (beer company)
airplane tickets -- twice (radio station & forget who sponsored the other)
Paris -- 2 trips -- 1 w/tix to EuroDisney (MasterCard), 1 w/tix to the French Open (USA Network)
Trip to Los Angeles (radio station/Universal Studios)
Jamaica w/a week at an all-inclusive resort (Nestle) & my mom won the same prize (they gave away 90 trips)
Sundance Film Festival (Chase bank)

$1000 cash (twice) - Kraft foods; an Atlanta TV station

Was on a game show -- "Top Card" on The Nashville Network (TNN) where I was champion for a day and won spectacular prizes like: a chainsaw, a leaf blower, a sewing machine, a set of his & hers bowling balls w/matching satin jackets (plzzzz don't be jealous!)

Lots of smaller prizes (too many to name)

Waiting to hear those magical words of ... "you've won a new car!"

etadrisophila 08-22-2012 08:31 AM

Forest Gump VCR
2 Best Buy $25 gift certificates

Uh, how do you make THIS happen? Do you just keep an eye out for sweepstakes? I want a free vacation!

ChioLu 08-22-2012 09:07 AM

There are sweepstakes newsletters that you can subscribe to -- like a magazine subscription. I won most of the trips BEFORE all the sweepstakes are published on the internet, but just won the trip to Sundance in January. Just google "sweepstakes" and you'll find a ton. But, you have to pay taxes on prizes (about 1/3 the ARV) so it's never really "free".

DeltaBetaBaby 08-22-2012 09:46 AM

Once upon a time, there was a website called GreekCentral.com that sold lettered merchandise and stuff. Anyway, they had a $5000 sweepstakes, and I won it, and they came to my sorority house with a giant check and a camera crew.

In the pictures, it turns out that the fancy lighting made my sweater entirely see-though.

dreamseeker 08-22-2012 09:54 AM

I won tickets to see Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco and some other folks. My boyfriend was coming from a different state and the idiot bus driver some how made a 3 hour trip a 6 hour trip. so we missed Lupe and it was also raining. The seats were for the standing section and far so we could only see it on the big tvs. Good thing we had an umbrella.
