New York is strange. Many in NYC are oblivious to greek life. My sands is from NY and he didn't know about Alpha until he came to Ohio. You can spend weeks there and not see one letter, license plate--NOTHIN! Is it just me???

Diva_56 12-04-2001 02:15 PM

Your right dirtymike..

Half of my friends don't even know what I am talking about when I tell them about black greeks... and these folks are black and in college! It seems the greek circle here is very small compared to the millions that live here and don't know nada about greeks... except what they have seen on Animal House, School Daze etc.

Southern Cali

in southern cali in terms of #'s i see mostly

DST
ZPB
AKA
Sgrho

Omega
Kappa
Sigma
Alpha
Iota

in terms of community service i think all our organizations need to work on their visibility/public image because they are hard at work but seldom do i see any articles, etc about what the black greeks are doing in the community.

College Station and Houston, TX

Oh my campus in College Station (90 miles NW of Houston) the undergraduate chapters most visible and most on the move are:

AKA & DST (equally on top) for the ladies and KAPsi and APhiA for the men, with the men of KAPsi proclaiming a small lead as they host a major comedy event and the largest step show in TX.

At home, in Houston the grad chapters most visible are hard to say, because there are like 6 chapters of AKA and 3 of DST. So not knowing which chapter is doing what I would say the ladies in both hold it down. They are both incredibly active and working hard in the community.

Fraternally speaking, I am not so sure. The men I know who are major community leaders happen to be Alphas, but on the chapter level, I am not sure of who does what.

SEE..

I can tell you from Cali PositivelyAKA, cause I think you are the only one so far to mention SgRho!

I am in central Cali but I would have to say:

DST
SgRho/Aka(tied)
ZphiB

For the men I would say

AphiA
Kappa Alpha Psi
PhiBetaSigma

In cali, we have a lot of Sgrhos here.

I am in LoCal (San Diego/OC) and would agree with Soror PositivelyAKA's observations.
She has a good point about not seeing many articles, whether in the wider press or in the black press, where there should be more coverage.
Our black paper in San Diego just ran a story and photos for our AKA Coat Day, but the article wasn't that long.
:(

I tried...

but it was killing me, lol. I just had to say, while AKA (my grad chapter, anyway) isn't that visible in the community, we do most of our "service" in donating money. We are the invisible do-ers. I just had to get that out there, it was eating at me, lol. Shoot, everybody had their org on their list. I wasn't havin' it, lol. :)

New York City

What I see in the city is that most of the ugrad chapters have either dissolved(literally or lack of representation) or are under suspension/investigation. However, I have seen a lot of representation from the grad chaps, esp. those members of PBS with the members of APA running close behind. Also, the grad mem of AKA are doing their thing.

Its interesting...New Yorkers

I too have noticed that no one organization really is more visible than another. I am very active in my chapter as well as in the community. I don't recall my chapter ever receiving a correspondence from any other Sorority regarding chapter happenings. Although on occasion, the NPHC will list events of the D9.

I think if we all collaborated more the issue of visibility would not be an issue at all. I know my chapter has an Archonette group at the Frederick Douglass Academy and the Deltas have a Delta Academy at the Mahalia Jackson elementary school, the Omegas sponsor a black college tour (my neo works with them on that project). I also see a ton of SGRhos all over New York. We have a bowling battle in the spring, which I am looking forward to again.

I have noticed the Zetas and Deltas in recent years support eachother in the undergraduate arena probably most. The fraternities seem to all be holding their own. I do recall reading in the local paper about an AKA luncheon one of the grad chapters was hostessing.

Like Ideal08, I think many of us (my chapter included) do much our service behind the scenes in our philanthropic giving, which is equally important.

Swamp Thang 12-05-2001 02:22 PM

it's all regional

places I've been....

Birmingham:

Omega
Kappa
Others not doing anything... (no Iota's in Alabama except Montgomery *Alabama State*)

AKA's
Zeta's
Delta's

In Tuscaloosa:

APhiA and Omega tied
KAPsi
PBS

Delta
AKA
ZPhiB
SGRho

In Nashville.. (depends on what campus you're on)

at Vanderbilt: KAPsi

at Tennessee State: Omegas & Alphas

prettypoodle6 12-05-2001 03:05 PM

im in southern cali too (los angeles/ inland empire) and these are my observations (based off of community service, social events, and articles)

sororities
DST (they're everywhere!)
SGRHO/ZETA (tied)
AKA (i know there are huge numbers of them, but they are not out/visible)

fraternities
KAPPAS
PHI BETA SIGMA
ALPHAS/OMEGAS (tied)
IOTAS

its funny how we all see things a little different! but its all gravy.

PKTSU01 12-05-2001 03:12 PM

In New York, at least central to upstate, stretching from westchester to buffalo, i'd say the msot common fraternities are
SAE, DEKE and TKE. The most common sororities are DDD, Alpha Phi and AXO.
