We may have had the "same" Dad. I include in that list The Highwaymen. Just last year, after the death of one of their members, they ended over 50 years of touring.

I saw them in concert at least 5 times and have most of their Cd's. Some powerful songs on them. Very few on Youtube.

We may indeed have had the "same" dad. Thanks for helping me remember mine today in such a special way!

I'd have to add to the list The Weavers, The Smothers Brothers and The New Christy Minstrels.

SOM and MysticCat, my parents may have been yours, too. Selfishly, when Mary Travers died, one of my first thoughts was that I would never get to see Peter, Paul and Mary in concert again. My eyes have completely misted over by watching that clip on YouTube - thank you for the memories.

Another amazing clip. So many have died for America, before and after the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of the year. May they rest in eternal glory.

I have been able to hold back the tears until this.

I was just thinking that all Veterans should automatically have today off as a thank you.

I remember this song from when I was a kid. I had it on a 45. I didn't understand it then, but I do know.

TANGENT - Apparently there are a great many of us who are siblings - my father sang with a The Kingston Trio-type of band (and the San Antonio Opera, come to that) and we wiled away the many hours traveling around the country singing those songs. "The Whistling Gypsy" was one of my favorites.

Back on topic: One of my facebook friends is apparently peeved that people are not recognizing the difference between Memorial Day - remember those military who have died - and Veterans' Day - remember those who are serving or who are retired. I simply said that I don't think we can thank our military enough.

The Ballad of Bill Hubbard
Harry Patch (The Last Tommy) died in July 2009. As the last surviving soldier to have experienced the horrors of the 1st world war trenches , he was 111 years old . Staunchly anti-war , his final years were characterised by a rising public profile , as he finally spoke of the horrors and futility of war . As a machine gunner , he would shoot the Germans legs , rather than kill them.....

Veterans Day always reminds me of this -- written by a dear friend and veteran, Hardy B. Abbott (RIP).

THE LONELIEST PRAYER

AS I SQUAT HERE IN THIS LONELY PLACE,
A MAN, MAYBE EVEN YOU FORGOT, I WONDER, AM I IN LIVING HELL?
AM I ALIVE OR NOT?
I THINK IT'S MORE THAN TEN YEARS NOW
SINCE MY LAST FRIEND LEFT THIS PLACE.

I GUESS HE'S BACK HOME-
WHEREVER THAT IS-
AMONG THE HUMAN RACE.
FORGIVE ME, LORD, IF I SEEM UNTRUE
TO THE VALUES MY PARENTS TAUGHT,
TO THOUGHTS OF YOU, OF FAMILY AND OF COUNTRY-
THESE THINGS FOR WHICH I FOUGHT.

BUT, AS I'VE ENDURED THE ENDLESS DAYS
THAT DRAGGED ON INTO YEARS,
I'VE BATTLED WITH MY VERY BEING
TO HOLD BACK THE BITTER TEARS.

MY CHILDREN,
BY NOW THEY'RE NO LONGER SMALL,
BY NOW THEY'VE NEARLY GROWN.

MY POOR WIFE, SHE'S HAD THAT TOO;
SHE'S RAISED THEM ALL ALONE.

I'VE WEPT TO HOLD MY DARLINGS,
TO WATCH MY CHILDREN GROW,
TO FEEL YOUR PRESENCE, LORD,
MY FAITH IN YOU TO SHOW.
BLESS ME, FATHER, AND TAKE THIS LIFE,
PLEASE LET IT END TODAY.

I WONDER HOW THEY LISTED ME - POW OR MIA?
