30 years ago today, Nesta Robert "Bob" Marley (my boyfriend/husband/shawty in another life) passed away. Some found/find his death to be mysterious and "too convenient."

Whatever the case may be, I still listen to his music on a regular basis. I love all of his songs, even the stuff from the very beginning of his career.

Here are my favorites:

"Stir It Up" (boomchickawowow!!!)

"No Woman No Cry"

What say you, GCers?

(And Marley's fine self made some fine sons. :o)

Thanks for posting this:D

"3 Little Birds" is my favorite Marley song (and it might be one of the best songs of all time - definitely makes the first cut) ... so of the ones unmentioned, I'll dig a little further back into the early Marley era for some favorites.

Sometimes we forget that Bob Marley and the Wailers weren't just the seminal reggae band - they also pioneered dub and ska, putting out some of the best mid-tempo stuff of the time:

"Guava Jelly/This Train" - this version is a beating, a near-rival for "3 Little Birds"

"Mr. Brown" - the best song about Jamaican ghosts, period:

"One Cup of Coffee" - first single from a 17yo Marley ... the voice isn't developed, but creates a pantheon-level first-wave ska track anyway:

"Simmer Down" - Collaboration with the legendary Skatalites, showing the amazing amount of talent working in a relatively small population ...

Another reason why KSigRC is my cousin.

Being an Alpha Gam I get to celebrate Bob quite a bit if I have on something more yellow than buff ;)

I enjoy Soul Shakedown and Hallelujah Time, as well as Put it on and Lively up Yourself.

I also have to give Bob a shout out because if it wasn't for his music I wouldn't have had a witty retort when Mormons asked me where I thought Zion was located. My answers were: Israel, a park in Utah, and a mountain Bob Marley Sings about.

Awesome! :)

Remember when the Marley family lost a copyright lawsuit? Has anything changed regarding that?

Bob Marley Rises From Grave To Free Frat Boys From Bonds Of Oppression

Quote:

WILLIAMSBURG, VA—In an unprecedented effort to fight injustice, reggae music legend Bob Marley, dead since 1981, rose from his grave in Jamaica early Sunday to free his most devoted followers, American college fraternity members, "from the bonds of oppression."

Marley's recordings, which originally raised awareness of the Rastafarian faith and the plight of underprivileged Jamaicans and Africans, have taken on an even deeper meaning as the Greek fraternal system, a maligned, misunderstood minority group itself, has fervently embraced the driving, soulful music.

Minutes after his resurrection, the dreadlocked spirit materialized in the backyard of Epsilon Iota, the Sigma Nu chapter of the College of William and Mary in Virginia. Radiating a transcendent aura, Marley addressed the college's recent campus-wide ban on bonfires.

"I appeared to I fraternity brothers to tell them be strong," said Marley, standing in front of hundreds of hooting fraternity members. "I say don't let dean of students, Henry Riegert, fool ya, or even try to school ya. We'll get that bonfire going in time for da mixer, mon. A fire a man's own business."

Natural Mystic reminds me so much of the old college dorm.

Quote:

Things are not the way they used to be,
I won't tell no lie;
One and all have to face reality now.
'Though I've tried to find the answer to all the questions they ask.
'Though I know it's impossible to go livin' through the past -
Don't tell no lie.
I still wonder how the world would be if he were still alive.
