I still check just about everyday or two because of the spam but I agree with you guys in that folks move on with life (and the other posted reasons). I've been on since 01' and have seen the waves of change. I think GC is still relevant though because we've posted/created some great threads that are not only informational but funny as he**. I've seen threads quoted on other websites, blogs etc. Aside from the spammers, GC still has a lot of new members signing up everyday. We even have national officers from orgs checking it out.
Personally, I love GC because of the huge community it is. It's not regulated to JUST NPHC or locals, etc. I also like that GC is moderated. We've all seen some other fraternity/sorority chat sites come and go due to SPAM and unruly posts.

I also think the simple design has helped GC stick around. GC is easy to navigate, the colors are easy on the eyes and the ads are at a minimum. I think John has done very well with this site that wasn't even generating any $$ during the early years.

I think there are two reasons:

The first: there are just so many other social web sites that people can use to communicate.

Second: I feel that some regular posters have made it near impossible to come here and enjoy a casual chat in any forum. I mean, there are regular posters here who will take what someone says and split hairs on just one word, phrase, or meaning. In the early years of GC you did not have to worry about beaing soooooo politically correct. Now you do. :(

I agree. And this too:

As a former lurker turned poster. I would agree with this. Though I have thick skin and really could care less about being right on the internet so I still keep posting on topics that interest me.

I think this is a big one, at least it is for me. More & more people dont want to post/"get involved" if you will for that reason. While admittedly the occasional troll/trainwreck/spoof threads are fun to read, GC is not half as fun anymore as it was when I joined in 2003.

I also think others that were regulars in the past are too busy with life to come here & post regularly anymore. It is also possible they have become regular lurkers rather than posters because of the above reasons. Just my two cents.

Also:

I think GC is just like other message boards where a lot of the people who typed to each other also knew each other in real life or from other networking sites. That reduces the smartass potential and misunderstandings/misinterpretations. 99% of the people who I know in real life don't post here anymore.

This thread is starting to read like a cyberbullying commercial. LOL.

If the e-cops come get me for cyberbullying, I need someone assigned to retrieve my username from the iJail and someone else assigned to bring in my defense team. MysticCat, team leader.

I have noticed this as well, as I havent been posting as much the past few months either. I have 2 jobs, plus wedding planning so time is definitely limited.

AnchorAlumna 03-28-2011 03:29 PM

Agree on the snarkiness.

But....it's spring break time, plus a lot of the HS seniors aren't that worried yet about rush/recruitment.

It's always slow this time of year.

agzg 03-28-2011 03:34 PM

Really? People really think the snarkiness is new or somehow worse than it used to be?

This is boggling my mind.

Glad to see AlphaFrog started the first "What's happened to our beloved GreekChat" thread of 2011 - we have about 2 more to go - my guess is we'll have at least one in August.

Shellfish 03-28-2011 03:50 PM

Maybe the long-term relationship among Greekchat posters has mellowed into a comfortable silence.

agzg 03-28-2011 04:14 PM

There have always (OK, since April 2004) been "meanies" and there have always been people who don't post because of meanies.

DrPhil 03-28-2011 04:16 PM

In other words, this is another example of "back in the olden days when I was a pledge, we never did that...and we walked hundreds of miles barefoot in the freezing rain for our letters. My, how things have changed."

Meanwhile, you're really slacking in the music party department today. Don't you start a music party then not see it through.

DrPhil 03-28-2011 04:23 PM

Yeah I had the nerve to logoff and do other stuff.

I'm back and better than ever. :p

ASTalumna06 03-28-2011 04:30 PM

Um, DrPhil... are you trying to turn over a new leaf...?

Did you just get less snarky... or MORE snarky?...

;)
