As with Greek GPA requirements, the actual GPA is weighted based on 4.0 or 5.0 scale.

All of the "with honors" students at my school had a 3.0 and above and were NHS. I had over a 3.0 and was NHS; but a 3.9 isn't automatically better than a 3.0 if the 3.0 student was more active in the school and community.

Internally, we had a 5.0 scale. As far as everyone else was concerned, anyone above a 4.0 was given a 4.0. The transcript just showed that we took AP/Honors courses.

Okay. That is still based on a 5.0 scale.

I'm confused about why you bring up your college GPA.

The tone of your question was borderline rhetorical and essentially saying that you don't consider 3.09 with honors; and how could that be with honors at her school.

It WAS borderline rhetorical, but it was still a question. Essentially, me being confused as to how a 3.09 was honors, because in every academic setting I've been in, a 3.09 wouldn't have been close.

:) And at my high school academic setting, and others I'm familiar with, it would've been "with honors." Don't scoff at that, though.

Anyway, back to the sorority recruitment part of the question.

AnotherKD 03-24-2011 12:31 PM

@DrPhil, if I was scoffing, you'd know it.

But sure, back to the OP.

I did know it. That's why I said it. Duh.

This: I will remember, in the future, to clarify or level the playing field when entering a discussion. Honestly had no idea there was such a discrepancy in eligibility requirements or definition of "with honors." My bad for not asking for a clarification. Fell into the old trap of only applying my own knowledge to a situation, without investigating.

Am still curious as to the honors distinction, based on GPA, but bottom line: the OP is getting good advice on how to prepare for upcoming recruitment, so back to the original topic I will go. I posted in another thread the ilnk to the sticky on sorority recruitment; it's one of the top posts if the OP will go to that section of GC. Hope that contributes to her question.

Ditto to the first paragraph. I thought that writing what I had experienced would show other posters where my view was coming from. I guess that doesn't fly.

As with many topics, it doesn't fly if showing where your view is coming from is followed by dismissing other views as invalid or nonexistent.

When did I ever do that? Never did I say that anyone else's experiences were invalid, and if you thought that is what I meant, then you were way off.

Right now is probably a good time to start looking for people to write you recs! Use all your contacts and ask around to see if anyone you know is a sorority member from one of the sororities on your campus. If you can't find one for a specific chapter, you should start looking for a local Panhellenic organization to try and get recs. They don't need to be sent out any time too soon, but looking for people to write them will save you a lot of scrambling at the end. :)

At my school, we are on a 4.0 scale and graduating with honors is determined by the number of honors courses you have taken. Maybe not as prestigious as what another school's system may be, but oh well! I spoke with my guidance counselor and there is a possibility I could graduate with higher than a 3.09, so I will really have to end on a high note. Sorry for all the confusion.

Don't interpret the discussion as backlash and it wasn't against you. You did nothing wrong. Good luck to you. :)
