My friend's younger brother who is currently a student at UCLA says this video has turned the campus into a war zone. It brought all of the racial tension on campus to a head.

That's not necessarily a bad thing, as long as people keep their cool and avoid violence.

The racism and resentment is becoming a big deal at UCLA, and elsewhere in the UC system, Cal State system, and among aspiring California college students in general. A lot of caucasians complain that they can't get into the UC schools because they're filled with asian students from all over the U.S. (many first generation Americans). The people I know who went to UCLA (and this was 10 years ago) used to call it University of Caucasians Lost in Asians. California did away with affirmative action in public school admissions 10-12 years ago, but I know a lot of people who think it should be reinstated so that more white people can get in.

I was in LA a couple weeks ago. People still call it that.

@the bolded... Those people do know that affirmative action still wouldn't be for them, right? They do realize it is for groups who have been discriminated against historically, not just whichever group has lower numbers on campus.

Watching that video from a perspective of one who lives LIKE 3000+ miles away reminds me of some spoof.

Did this person actually post this as a serious message? How did SHE get into UCLA? From where I sit, UCLA has always seemed like a very prestigious top tier university, and MAYBE, just MAYBE, that's why there are large numbers of Asians, who are high achievers, who attend the school. Is this girl for real? Is there a building on campus named for a family member?

I'm embarassed for her.

oclady21 03-20-2011 06:22 PM

when i was applying to colleges in 1999 for the 2000 school year, the only people they were really accepted into UCLA were those with above a 4.0. the kids also had to be highly involved at their high school. the people who applied had to have a stacked resume, but maybe today the standards aren't the same???

anyways, i just wanted to make a post because the girl that made the video resigned being a student at UCLA. there was such a huge backlash against her and she probably felt uncomfortable and gave up. there was a huge article about her in the orange county register.

she probably NEVER imagined the amount of press it would receive.

Well.....the REALLY important question we are all dying to ask is....was she in a sorority?

Source is my friend's brother, who is in a fraternity at UCLA and knows the girl. But that's still just hearsay, which is why I said "supposedly."

She's leaving UCLA

Below is Wallace’s full letter:

In an attempt to produce a humorous YouTube video, I have offended the UCLA community and the entire Asian culture. I am truly sorry for the hurtful words I said and the pain it caused to anyone who watched the video. Especially in the wake of the ongoing disaster in Japan, I would do anything to take back my insensitive words. I could write apology letters all day and night, but I know they wouldn’t erase the video from your memory, nor would they act to reverse my inappropriate action.
I made a mistake. My mistake, however, has lead to the harassment of my family, the publishing of my personal information, death threats, and being ostracized from an entire community. Accordingly, for personal safety reasons, I have chosen to no longer attend classes at UCLA.

People shouldn't be threatening her life and releasing her personal information. That's dumb.

But, she's definitely playing the unknowing victim here. Her dumbass knew that she was making an offensive (or potentially offensive) videotape. She didn't release that for comedic value. She released that because she thought she was the voice of the oppressed white folks who are tired of those "model minority" Asians taking over the world.

There's nothing accidental about creating a web video. I do not believe that she is sorry.

Dumb question. Why aren't Asian students who live in, say, Pennsylvania going to Pitt or Bucknell or Penn instead of going all the way out to UCLA? If that's what you mean.

Anyone who talks on their cell in the library regardless of race, gender or anything else should get tossed out.

I'm totally with you on the talking on the cell phone in the library. Last week I was at my local public library picking up a book at the main desk. A woman was talking on her phone inside one of the glassed in "quiet" rooms with the door open at least 100 feet away from that desk, and we all got the full blast of her "private" conversation. I didn't notice what race she was. It was just damn annoying. We need to reinstate phone booths just so annoying people have somewhere to go with their cell phones.
