i thought the problem was that she was afraid that her sisters would be upset with her if she left her present school and that she thought that she had to quit her sorority if she transferred.

you are right though-in some sororities, if you take alumna status, you are permanently an alum. i do know of others where you can become an active collegiate member after taking alum. status, but you have to had left the chapter in good standing.

maybe her best bet would be to consult her national office.

yeah, well basically the problem is that i will definately be seeing them around next year because i live in a small town and am going to be right by the school campus even though i am going to the cc. i just know it is going to be awkward bumping into them... but i think i am going to transfer anyways.

Why on earth would it be awkward?

You're not sneaking out of town at midnight like the Baltimore Colts (I know that's before your time but look it up). You're transferring schools to get more of what you want out of your academic career. All you have to say is, "As much as I hate to leave you guys, I can't get the major that I want here, so I'm transferring to a CC so I can get into UCwherever when I'm a junior. I'm going to be nearby though, so even if I can't be active in the sorority, I still hope we can hang out, go for coffee, yada yada yada."

From your and others' posts it sounds like this is a quite common thing to do in your neck of the woods, so again, I don't know why you think anyone would be offended. If they're your sisters and they love you, they will want you to do what is right for you.
