For real. I thought it was a joke when my mother-in-law was telling me the story- but it is completely real. Great-Grandma has dementia and apparently on that floor at least, "dancing with oneself" is not uncommon.

So her little friend was placed in her side table, and when she is acting like she needs it, the staff will remind her where it is.

I say go for it. The biggest problem in my grand-M-I-L's nursing home is the ratio of men to women. Too many women, not enough men.

In fact the nursing home even encouraged the family to buy great-grandma a vibrator because she was using other items to satisfy herself and they were afraid she would injure herself. My father-in-law was mortified at the thought, but did have my brother-in-law go buy one for her. :)

i shoulda known better than reading this thread while eating

Ha! Wasn't there a thread about archaic language? Why was there a change from VD to STD?

VD was closely associated with syphillis and gonorrhea. Needless to say there are way more STDs than those two.

There was more than those 2 back then too...you the herpes and clammyderia and uhhhhh....what was that other one....oh yeah PCCR - Post Coital Crotch Rot.

@ the sex toys comment...can you imagine Mothers Day, bringing Dear old grandmom the Ron Jeremy Special?

I used to be curious about sex into the golden years, myself. I was told by an older woman that, as long as you keep having sex, you can keep having sex. If you stop, it's hard to get it back...supposedly.

Being in geriatrics, these are both spot on. As a nun I know once said, "It's the last thing they think about, and they don't really care about with whom."

Think about it. They're old, the sharpest of them have lost some of their memories, but they can all go back to happier, more exciting times. So what do you think they think about? It's not like they can see as well as they used to, so they'll each take what they can get. STDs are a growing problem for those in a home - which is why mechanical friends are encouraged by a lot of nursing home staffs.

When I say "back then" I mean pre-80s/90s. Chlamydia really wasn't regularly diagnosed before then. When you said "VD" in 1975, you either meant syphillis or gonorrhea.

Sup Robin.

Thanks, 33girl for explaining VD. I think they say "VD" during the dinner scene (bust out scene where Michael chokes Angela) in "Why Did I Get Married."

G-Kue 1911 03-20-2010 11:05 AM

I'm all about getting it in till it doesn't work (with or without medical help...lol).

G-Kue 1911 03-20-2010 11:06 AM

I hadn't heard V.D since the "Good Times" episode when JJ got caught up...lol!

I laugh when I hear GC, it means something different to me...Gonorrhea and Chlamydia! They are frequently diagnosed together.

When I was in medical school, I was really good friends with another female student. We both went into General Surgery and did most of our 4th year together. After awhile, one of the medicine residents started calling us GC..."Because when you see one; you always see the other!" BTW...I decided I was Chlamydia :P

Actually, in more recent years it's been changed to STI though that is catching on very slowly. This was explained at a safe sex presentation in college and the instructor said something like "Diseases randomly manifest in the body through no or very little fault of your own. These are 'infections' because you went out and got that."

Though Angela and Mike did call it "VD" in WDIGM? That was a little weird to hear it in such a recent movie.
